  5. Regional Collaboration – Strength in Numbers

  6. Regional Collaboration – Strength in Numbers If North Texas was a state…

  7. Successful Collaborative Efforts in North Texas DFW International Airport • Region’s growth necessitated a jointly-owned international airport • The two largest cities – Dallas and Fort Worth – came together under the guidance of the FAA • Out of the development of DFW International Airport came the North Texas Commission. 1977 ad campaign

  8. Successful Collaborative Efforts in North Texas Superconducting Super Collider • 1989, a regional consortium was successful in the selection of Waxahachie as the site of the Superconducting Super Collider • This initiative involved municipalities, higher education institutions, businesses and other entities

  9. Successful Collaborative Efforts in North Texas Super Bowl XLV • Super Bowl bid was a collaborative effort between the Mayors of Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth and Irving • Preparation for Super Bowl XLV continues to be a regional effort with cities across the region involved in some aspect of the event

  10. Successful Collaborative Efforts in North Texas Tier 1 Research University in North Texas • Three North Texas Universities banded together to gain Tier 1 Research University funding • Effort reached into the business community as the three university presidents jointly met with leaders to discuss Proposition 4 • Collaborative effort resulted in the passing of Proposition 4

  11. And the results are …

  12. Why we need more collaboration Keeping up with Clean Air Restrictions • Nine counties in North Texas are in a non-attainment areas, requiring a State Implementation Plan (SIP) • The goal post keeps moving – EPA compliance was 85 ppb for ozone, but has now been moved to 75 ppb for ozone. North Texas had made strides but have not met the previous compliance level • Non-compliance costs us federal funding

  13. Why we need more collaboration Long-Range Water – growth outpacing supply • North Texas is one of the fastest growing regions in the country, adding approximately 1 million people to the population every seven years • The region’s water supply will have to double over the next 50 years to meet this demand • Civic leaders, business leaders and elected officials need to come together for long-range water planning

  14. Why we need more collaboration Regional Transportation Infrastructure • Regional growth predicted to bring us to 10 million residents by 2050 • A seamless regional rail system is vital to the continued growth of our region • A 20-minute errand today will take you 50 minutes within the next several decades • Roads and rails cannot stop at city/county line, it must be a regional effort

  15. Why we need more collaboration Innovation and Commercialization • Too often our technologies developed here are take out of state for commercialization • North Texas is poised to be the center for nano-technology design and commercialization

  16. Without Regional Collaboration … • No solutions to issues that don’t have borders • Air quality – remain unable to meet standards • Long-range water – no plan to meet growing demand • Transportation infrastructure – disjointed systems • Missed opportunities for business growth • Loss of sense of community • Passed over for future Super Bowls or other world-class events

  17. And the results are …
