History • In 1592 , Falkland Islands discovered by a British captain. • In 1690, British captain Armstrong landed and occupied this island ,called it Falkland Islands. • In 1764, France occupied East Falkland Island. • In 1765,British occupied West Falkland Island. • In 1766,France sold Falkland Islands to Spain. It caused territorial dispute between British and Spain. • In1964,1965,Argentina put sovereignty claims to the UN, But no result.

  3. Leading up to the war • Seriouse Economic crises in ARG • wanted to divert attention from inside the country, to outside. • ARG felt the island belonged to them • Political reasons for war

  4. The war • 1982- ARG land on the Island, surprising UK • UK dispatches navy ships • The royal air force joins in • War starts • Britain wins

  5. The immediate affects of the war ARG: • Anti-government movement on ARG side • Leading eventually to the fall of ARG military government. BRITAIN: • Strong patriotism swept across the country • Strengthened the authority of conservative government.

  7. Solutions to conflict • Island Brittsh – share oil profits • Vote amongst islanders – democracy • U.S involvement – mediators • Shared sovierenity • Island becomes fully autonomous • Like FIN & SWE Åland dispute
