  2. Aims and Objectives Aims: • To review recent reforms in CPD. • To explore how the Excellence Gateway can help you plan your staff CPD programme. Objectives: By the end of the workshop you will: • Have an appreciation of how the reforms impact on your organisation. • Be able to access useful tools and resources by registering with the Excellence Gateway. • Identified challenges to the delivery of your organisation’s CPD programme. • Reviewed materials which can support your staff CPD programme. • Explored the CPD theme on the Excellence Gateway • Have planned your next steps in developing a staff CPD programme.

  3. Background to CPD 2007 Government Reforms include: • Revised teaching qualifications for new educators and professional status for all educators in community learning and development, Further Education, offender learning and work-based learning. • CPD requirements for all educators.

CPD Requirements In order to maintain their professional status, all educators must: • Register with and join a professional body, e.g. the Institute for Learning http://www.ifl.ac.uk • Complete minimum of 30 hours CPD a year, if work full time • Complete pro rata CPD, with minimum requirement of 6 hours, if work part-time • Maintain a record and reflective account of their CPD and submit CPD record by Aug 31st each year. This can be completed online via CPD self-declaration form on the IfL website.

  5. CPD requirements Employers are expected to support their staff with their professional development. As a manager you may be responsible for CPD across a team or the whole organisation. How can you ensure staff have the best possible CPD experience? How can you ensure that staff CPD addresses your organisational priorities?

  6. Activity 1: Discussion 1. What challenges do you face in coordinating your organisation’s CPD programme? 2. How do you ensure that CPD programmes support the organisation’s business priorities?

Identifying priorities Priorities may have been identified through: • OfSTED inspection • Internal audit • Requirements for organisational efficiency • Staff are encouraged to develop a personal plan which is matched against their organisational context and development plan. • The CPD theme on the Excellence Gateway has been developed to summarise relevant tools and resources.

The Institute for Learning's model of dual professionalism • The model of dual professionalism categorises development needs under the following headings: • Learning and teaching • Subject specialism or • Policy context • The Excellence Gateway can support managers in planning their CPD programmes to ensure they meet organisational needs in each area.

Activity 3: Exploring tools and resources • In small groups, look at Handouts A and B • The handouts direct you to sections of the Gateway which focus on specific tools to support CPD • Each group explores and discusses the resources • Make some summary notes on your handout to feedback to the rest of the group.

  13. Programmes to support CPD 1. The E-CPD Programme consists of 2 related programmes: a) The Professional Development Advisers (PDAs) training b) The E-Guides Programme 2. The Subject Learning Coach (SLC) Programme: Consists of 2 training programmes for SLCs and ALCs (Advanced Learning Coaches)

  14. Programmes to support CPD (Cont.) 3. SLC/STEM Networks Participation in the Subject Learning Coach or STEM networks can also count towards your CPD requirements. 4. The Active Learning CPD Initiative Programme that uses active learning as a tool for improving attainment in the classroom and good practice transfer.

Speed sharing • Spend two minutes reflecting what TWO actions you can take forward within your organisation that may have an impact on developing your organisation’s CPD programme. • Share your two actions with another participant; you have two minutes to do this. They will then share their two actions with you. • Then find another person and repeat the process.
