  2. What do we mean by powerful learning?What do we mean by curriculum? Pedagogical knowledge and understanding Develop a shared vision? What do we mean by integration?

As for Curriculum, instead of assuming that every subject taught today is taught for a reason, we should begin from the reverse perspective:Nothing should be included in a required curriculum unless it can be strongly justified in terms of the future.If this means scrapping a substantial part of the formal curriculum, so be it. • Toffler, Future Shock - 1970

  4. The Curriculum – what is it? The NZ curriculum is a set of national curriculum statements which define the learning principles and achievement aims and objectives which all NZ schools are required to follow. NZ Curriculum Framework, 1993, Page 4

Marzano et al in their text "Dimensions of Thinking: A Framework for Curriculum and Instruction" http://www.ascd.org/readingroom/books/marzano88book.html, set out that thinking can be considered to be an integration of: • metacognition • creative thinking • critical thinking • . . . . and that there are an endless list of thinking processes that draw on core thinking skills. These processes include • Concept formation: organising information about an entity and associating that information with a label. • Principle formation: recognising a relationship between or among concepts. • Comprehending: generating meaning or understanding by relating new information prior knowledge. • Problem solving: analysing and resolving a perplexing or difficult situation. • Decision making: selecting from alternatives. • Research: conducting scientific inquiry. • Composing: developing a product. • Oral discourse: talking with other people. • With the core skill categories being : • Focusing Skills • Information Gathering Skills • Remembering Skills • Organising Skills • Analysing Skills • Generating Skills • Integrating Skills • Evaluating Skills

  6. Curriculum needs to change • Do new things in new ways not old things in new ways.

  7. Why use technology • Rationale • Technlology is everywhere and therefore should be in education • Research has shown where computer- based methods are effective • Teachers must identify specific contributions that techonology can and should make to an improved educaiton system.

Shared Vision & Powerful learning Schools must create a vision, define technologies role in the school then plan for it’s use Motivation Gaining learner attention Engaging Self-directed Linking learners to information sources Visualise problems and solutions Increase teacher productivity Cooperative learning Shared intelligence
