    1. Success and Failures of Reconstruction

    2. Accomplishments of Reconstruction Country brought back together Ended slavery (13th amendment) Citizenships for African Americans (14th amendment) Provided Universal male suffrage (15th amendment Debt relief (no more debtors prison) Modernized laws (fought against things like black codes) Promoted building of roads and canals (Henry Clay would be happy) State run public schools, paid for with new taxes (the Freedman’s bureau)

    3. Failures of Reconstruction Most blacks remained in a cycle of poverty/having no choice but to continue working the same farmland they did when slavery was legal Racist attitudes towards African Americans continued in both the South and the North Many Southern whites felt bitterness towards the Republican government for coming in and trying to change their way of life. This leads songs like A Good Ole Rebel, and groups like the KKK The Amnesty act allowed whites who refused to take the loyalty oath to vote again. The Compromise of 1877 pulled the remaining military out of the South and left the whites in charge of ensuring freedman get their rights.

    4. A Question Overall, I believe Reconstruction was a success/failure because… You can’t say it is a little of both. You must choose one side or the other.

    5. Mind Map You are going to create a mind map on three of the following Reconstruction related topics. A mind map should have mainly pictures with as few words as possible. (pages 296-300) Carpetbaggers and Scalawags Building Black communities Sharecropping Greed and Corruption (rise of the spoilsmen and corruption in business and government) The Election of 1872 and the panic of 1873
