Why should your project continue? • What are YOUR key objectives? • What is your ‘business case’ • What is your ‘usp?’ • Why should you receive funding and support? • Can you provide evidence of why your project is needed? • Who knows about your work? • Are you communicating with those who control resources?

  19. What is a social enterprise? “A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners” (UK Government Department for Trade and Industry )

  20. Reasons to consider social enterprise • Cuts in public funding • Grant funding disappearing • Value for money • Need to demonstrate business approach and become ‘sustainable’ • New opportunities • Generating income helps independence

  21. Challenges of running a business • You need an idea that will make money! • Market research your opportunities-who are your customers? Who will pay for the service/product? Who are your competitors? • You need start up capital plus cash flow • You need a legal structure • Go it alone or with partners ?

  22. You must be entrepreneurial “A social entrepreneur is someone who works in an entrepreneurial manner, but for public or social benefit, rather than to make money. Social entrepreneurs may work in ethical businesses, governmental or public bodies, quangos, or the voluntary and community sector”. School for Social Entrepreneurs, UK

  23. Other points • Social enterprise is the BUZZ concept • Social enterprise does not guarantee funding • Start up businesses have high failure rate • Essential to learn from others • Network with other social enterprises • Consider partnering with others • Get as much (free) advice and training as possible
