  2. What we will look at tonight…. • A look around a laptop + Connectivity • Power Settings • Disk Clean Up and Defrag • Antivirus and Antispyware • Cleaning up the desktop • Desktop settings • Uninstalling programs • Backup hard disk

  3. A look around a laptop • CD Rom – DVD Writer – dvd-r, dvd+r • Card Readers – SD/MMC, MS, adapters • What happens when a card is inserted • PCMCIA slot • Sound • Microphone

  4. Connectivity • USB connections – proper way to eject a USB printer or pendrive • Attaching an external vga cable – connecting an interactive whiteboard • Fn + F7 • Other function keys and their use • HDMI / Firewire.

  5. Common Key Functions • Ctrl + C = copy • Ctrl + V = paste • Ctrl + X = cut • Ctrl + A = select all • Ctrl + B = bold +I = italics +U = underline • Ctrl + Z = undo • Win + E= Computer • Win + U = Access • Win + L = Lock • Win + M = Desktop

Disk Defragment • Organises your program data • Allows programs to run more efficiently • Should be done at least once a month • Takes up to 4 hours depending on size of hard disk and need for defragging • Go – Start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter. • Defrag all drives but especially C.

  7. Disk Cleanup + Uninstall • Same place as defrag • Frees up space on C and Recycle Bin • Safely removes all unwanted files • Uninstall unwanted and unused progs • Windows 7 – Control Panel – Programs -Programs and Features. Others – Control Panel – Add or remove programs.

  8. Desktop Settings • Screen settings • Mouse Properties • Turn on “Tap off when typing” • Taskbar – adding to taskbar • Start Menu

  9. Wired and Wireless Internet • Through network – using network point • Using wireless access point – schools broadband is safer than own • Access to Scoilnet resources • Using mobile broadband of own • Simple problems – switch, access code.

  10. Night 2 – Your Laptop and You • Backing up files and hard disk • Start – Control Panel – Backup and Restore.(Windows 7) • Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Backup (XP) • Desktop – tidy up and short cuts.

  11. Battery Maintenance • Charge fully – don’t overcharge if possible – may overheat. • Run down to 20% at least – then fully recharge – battery will last longer • Change settings – with battery, on full power • Battery replacement – serial no.

  12. Start –Programs-Accessories – System Tools • System Restore – allows you to turn back the clock to when comp was running efficiently – to undo newly installed programs that have upset your computer. • System Information – informs of all info about your computer set up.

Night 2 – Control Panel • Windows 7 – Start – Control Panel • Windows XP – Start – CP – switch to classic view (on left panel). • Mouse – allows you speed up mouse and determine what wheel does. Check out all tabs on top. • Display – left blue panel (Win 7) many changes – screen resolution, brightness etc and on bottom “Personalisation” allows you to change background image etc. In XP this is Display Properties – Desktop tab - Browse

Night 2 - Downloading • Copying text from website • Saving an image • Downloading from Internet • Locating and installing Cute pdf reader • Creating your own pdf files – When Cute pdf is installed Open Word doc – click on Print, change printer to Cute PDF and click print – WAIT – then save as pdf when dialogue box opens.

  15. Night 2 – Managing Files & more….. • File Management – keeping files organised… • Image Resizing and Image Resizer. • Useful websites for Interactive Whiteboard – support for literacy and numeracy –www.stpatsbns.eu/achill • Creating and Using Tables in Word • And much more…..
