  1. Best Ways to Take Care of Teeth with Braces

  2. Fix Teeth Alignment • Braces help fix teeth alignment. If you would like to straighten crooked teeth or eliminate small gaps in between teeth, you may want to consider getting this treatment at the dental office. • It’s best to talk to your dentist about the best dental care solution for your specific needs. Note, however, that once you already have braces on your mouth, cleaning your teeth may be more challenging.

  3. Here are more tips on caring for your teeth when you have braces:

  4. Focus on Food Debris that may have been Stuck in your Braces • Food particles may get trapped in tiny spaces on your brackets and even on the wires. Be gentle, though, to prevent the metal wires and brackets from getting damaged. • Always use a toothbrush with soft bristles and head. Use a mirror as you floss your teeth so you can see areas where you need to focus on. Use gentle hands and be careful when threading to also avoid damaging your teeth and gums.

  5. Wear Mouthguard if you wish to join Sports Activities • Protect your braces by wearing mouthguard if you are to participate in a physical activity. • It’s best to consult your dentist about a customized mouthguard. Customized mouthguards work better than those readily available in stores. • They're specifically designed to fit your mouth properly and snugly. They also feel more comfortable when worn. Overall, they work better too.

  6. Avoid Sticky and Hard Food • For the meantime, you may want to avoid sticky and hard food. Sticky food may cling onto the wires and brackets of your braces. • Watch out as well if you have the habit of chewing on object such as pen or anything hard such as ice cubes. Get the help and support of your loved ones and family so you can avoid doing so.

  7. Finally, let your Dentist know about any Issues with your Braces • Teeth with braces may feel uncomfortable at first, but you’ll be fine once you get used to it, which shouldn’t take long. • Be sure to advise your dentist should a bracket be removed or if you feel pain in your mouth. If a wire is sticking out or a bracket keeps rubbing against your gum, your dentist will be able to provide you orthodontic wax to cover the sharp area.

  8. Check These Out! • Take care of your teeth when you have braces with these tips. Share them with your friends and loved ones too who are also getting dental work done on their teeth. • Brought to you by Yonge & St. Clair Dental Smile Centre.
