  2. Introduction • I'm doing Arts Law at Macquarie university. • Honours in Politics. • I have Cerebral Palsy which makes my speech difficult to understand and effects my mobility. • My speech is my primary disability.

  3. Pathfinder • Manufactured by the Prentke Romich Company. • High tech AAC device.

  4. AAC • AAC stands for alternative and augmentative communication. • AAC is basically any form of non verbal communication. • Ranging from low tech methods such as signing, and communication boards to high tech voice output devices, such as the Pathfinder.

  5. Something New • Communication devices are relatively new to the tertiary education, and employment sectors. • Very few people who use communication devices in tertiary education and employment in Australia. • Assumptions that everyone with complex communication needs has a cognitive defect.

  6. How this Technology has assisted my participation in tertiary education • It has assisted me to participate in tutorials. • One tutor asked me direct questions! • The Pathfinder is also a computer access device.

  7. Reducing Keystrokes • Word prediction - As the words are typed a number of words come up on the touch screen for the user to select. • Activity rows –frequently used phrases – accessed via the touch screen. • Important for the prevention of RSI.

  8. Cost • $18000 • Insufficient funding available for communication devices. • Barrier to people gaining employment.
