  4. Policy 1005: Health and Safety 2. Policy (…) Faculty, staff, students, and other members of the Virginia Tech community must conduct university operations in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and EHSS requirements.

Policy 1005: Health and Safety Responsible Parties • University President • Executive Vice President, Provost, Vice Presidents, Vice Provosts and Deans • Directors/Department Heads • Faculty, Principal Investigators, Supervisors, and Safety Representatives • Employees and Students • Contractors • Human Resources • EHSS

  6. Policy 1005: Health and Safety • Directors/Department Heads • Implement the policy • Designate, as necessary, a safety team • Designate safety representatives • Direct employees to obtain training

  9. Emergency Action Plans Why? Departments must be prepared to respond effectively to smaller-scale emergencies where immediate action must be taken to protect departmental operations, personnel, and visitors to our campus.

  11. Emergency Action Plans What? • Designated roles • Emergency procedures (notification, routes) • Assembly locations • Special hazards • Communicated to everyone

Emergency Action Plans • What else? • Planning for persons with disabilities • Training and drills • Fill-in-the-blank template • Includes information on university alert systems • Shelter-in-place, fire, weather and other emergencies • Emergency procedures for faculty, lecturers and teaching assistants

  13. Reduce Hazards in Worksites • Perform periodic self-audits • Principal investigators • Supervisors • Other designated person(s)

  14. Reduce Hazard Exposures • Assure employees properly trained • Mandatory training by EHSS • Departmental training • Manage training attendance recordkeeping

  15. Reduce Hazard Exposures • Assure proper use of personal protective equipment • PPE Coordinator by department or area or workgroup – PPE hazard assessment

  16. Designated Health/Safety Coordinator or Team • Why??? • Assure employee training, record keeping, self-audits, hazard reporting • Devolves to Department Head/Director if not assigned
