  2. If you notice that your dog is acting odd recently, chances are your dog is actually feeling stress. Many people conveniently forgot that even dogs can feel stress and it actually very prevalent! It is just that many owners do not know how to identify the symptoms of dog stress as well as knowing the effects that stress has on the dog. What makes things worst is that some owners have been unknowingly inflicting stress on their dogs. Here are some of the ways at which dogs can feel stress from our actions

  3. • • • • • Too many commands for a single action Aggressive actions towards the dog Leaving a new dog alone at home Too much punishment Lack of love in the house Loud sounds or a change of environment While there might be other ways at which you can bring stress or anxiety to the dog, the above is just a quick summary of events that are more common. How to identify if the dog is feeling stressed or anxious. So while we know the actions that will trigger the dog’s anxiety issues, it will be important for us to know how to correctly identify when a dog is feeling anxious r stressed. Here are some of the symptoms that shows us when the dog is feeling stressed. • • • • • • • • Decrease in appetite Sleeping more than usual Howling when they are left alone at home Higher occurrence of diarrhoea Excessive drooling Excessive aggression towards humans or even people that they are familiar with Pinned ears and excessive panting Constipation If your dog is exhibiting more than one of the above examples, it will be a clear sign of dog stress. How to help a stressed or anxious dog Now that you know how to identify if the dog is feeling stressed or anxious, it will be equally important for you know how to treat the problem and nip it at the bud. What to do with your rescue dog’s confusing behaviour

  4. This very day in which we live, there seems to be a certain growing trends. • • • More natural disasters, More broken homes, More animal abuse and neglect. It seems that many kinder/gentler people these days are proud owners of rescue dogs. we look at these beautiful animals with their all unique colors ,markings even their personalities. We wonder what breeds they are . We wonder what those frightened eyes have seen, what happened to them? Why do they act so fretfull and scared? We wish we could talk to them so we could really understand and be of help. The first step in helping a troubled rescue dog is to realize that they are not little poeple. They don’t function on feeling but by instinct. they are altogether different than us. For instance #1never give affection to your dog when they are show irrational fear ,anxiety or bad behaviour. all it does is tell the dog that they are doing the right thing in being fearful ect… #2 Understand that your dog NEEDS to see you as the CALM ,ASSERTIVE, PACK LEADER.Understand also you might be part of the solution In others words your dog is noticing when you are fearful, jumpy or hyper, ect… Notice how your dogs takes his /her cues from you. I would like like to suggest 3 tools and a longer term solution. One of the best ways is actually a supliment called the calming bites by Zesty paws. For those who favor Non-Supliment soloutions, Thunder Coats and/or Thunder caps may be a good answer. And there are a whole variety of natural and homiopathic soloutions. We have found a book that outlines may of these methods called New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats. It features many methods of calming your dog including: • • • • • • • Herbs, Acupressure, Massage, Homeopathy, Flower Essences, Natural Diets, Healing Energy By clicking the links on the upper right of this page, or the buttons below, you can see the features and bvennifits of esch of these methods, and decide wich is best suited to you and your dog. 5. Dog Stress and Anxiety Modern life stresses us human beings, but our dogs are also stressed. This is because during their days they are often surrounded more by cement than by nature, more by noise than by silence. Exactly as for us stress is harmful both from a physical point of view and from a phycological point of view, it is also for them. Why are dogs also stressed? Accustomed as we are to live our dogs according to our parameters of right and wrong, of lawful and unlawful, we do not care much about what is right or legitimate for them. Our dogs live constantly in a society that, of course, is not natural to them. It is true that over the years the situation is improving and the “granted” spaces (dog parks, and dog friendly open spaces) for our friends are increasing exponentially. It is not a mystery that in our human world their is a living space marginal and inadequate. The chaos of the city, the limitations in the parks, the demands for impeccable behavior (for us humans) in every situation, are all things that dogs have to endure. All this does not remain without consequences. Even for them we can talk about Stress. What is stress? We can call stress any cause that, with its prolonged action over time, causes a harmful stimulus to the organism causing a reaction. All the factors of life to which we have not sufficiently adapted are stressful and lead us to have certain reactions. The endocrinologist Hans Selye made a precise distinction between distress and eustress , let’s see what it is. The distress Distress is to all effects the negative aspect of stress. In fact it is a hostile state to which the subject cannot adapt. Acute and prolonged stress lowers the immune system and damages the functioning of internal organs. Eustress The Eustess is a term composed of two parts. The prefix eu which derives from the Greek means “good” and combined with the word stress, literally means good stress. Eustress is the positive aspect of stress related to the “adaptation syndrome”. It is the positive cognitive response to stress. Eustress is not defined by the type of stress that generates it, but rather by how it is perceived and reacted to. Symptoms of Dog Stress and Anxiety For many people who have an anxious pet, leaving the house to go to work or to walk is always a delicate moment. Many puppies suffer when they need to separate from their owners. And so much agitation is bad for the health of the four-legged friend.

  6. The levels of cortisol, (the stress hormone), are deregulated, which can harm a dog’s cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Here are some signs that your pet is agitated beyond account: • • • • • • • • • • • Breathing breath Increased heart rate Pee and poop in unsuitable places Destruction of objects Excessive heartbeats Refusal of food and / or water Excessive salivation, drooling, panting or sweating Tucked Tail Ear Positioning Yawning Escape Attempt All these symptoms manifest themselves in the absence of the person to whom the animal is very attached. Check out the following 4 tips to help your dog overcome stress, anxiety and fear and prevent him from biting someone or getting worse. 1.Find out what is causing the fear and stress in the animal. Find out what triggered your stressThe first thing you should do is find out what is causing the anxiety, fear or stress in your animal. This can sometimes be obvious, like another dog nearby, but sometimes it is more difficult. The main tip here is to pay attention to your dog’s body language. Is he looking a lot at some place or object? Running and cowering in the opposite direction of something? You are in watchful mode (looking frantically at all sides – this may indicate that the environment is leaving you stressed)? If you cannot identify the animal’s stressor, a professional trainer can help. 2.Remove the cause of stress from the animal When you finally find out what is affecting both your dog, it is essential to ward off this cause as this will improve the animal’s life and your well-being. The more your dog is exposed to the cause of the disturbance, the more it will become stressed and anxious. Forcing the animal to face its fear and to approach that which causes it disturbance can worsen the situation even more. 3.Don’t Force Your Dog to Face their Fears Many people think that putting the dog in front of what is causing their fear, anxiety or stress will cause the dog to lose the fear and calm down or become accustomed to that cause. Doing this can just make your pet even worse and more stressed and aggressive. And this aggression can end up being not only against what is causing the dog fear, but also the people who live around it and against its own guardian. 4.Other solutions It is not always easy to understand what the cause of the stressed dog is. Often it is necessary to proceed by trial and error, to observe the behavior of one’s dog, the signs he manifests and in what circumstances or whether in the presence of other animals or people. Keep in mind, then, that each dog has an individual character different from anyone else with different reactions to a stressful situation: an extrovert subject, for example, will tend to destroy things, while an introvert will probably turn anxiety over of himself in a self-destructive manner.

  7. If you find that the dog is really suffering from stress (and not from some pathology) you can try to help him with specific products such as specially designed garments like the Thundercoat, that helps your dog stay calm all day, or with supliments like those offered here. (eg. Calming Bites) or, again, with natural remedies (eg Bach flowers). Either way, never forget to ask for help from a veterinarian you trust and, in this case, for a trainer or professional dog trainer. Conclusions In recent years we try to be careful about the stress that affects the dog and it is done responsibly. Let’s not forget the eustress, however, which allows the dog to adapt and learn. This means that small positive stress situations can be brought to life by the dog, so that it can increase its capacity to stay in the world and adapt to it.
