  1. CHARACTERISTICSOFLEADERSHIP Bishop Daniel Priests Conference May 2004

  2. Leadership Characteristics • HONESTY AND INTEGRITY • TEAM DEVELOPMENT • LEADERS MUST ALSO BE FOLLOWERS • MANAGING CHANGE • MANAGING A HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

  3. “Judge me O Lord according to my righteousness, and according to my integrity within me” (Psalm 7:8)

  4. you shall not steal • you shall not murder • you shall not give false witness against your neighbour • you shall not covet your neighbour’s house • “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” • (John 8:32)

  5. BELIEFS & PRACTICE BELIEFS PRACTICE A PERSON OF HYPOCRISY (Circle is broken because the beliefs are not the same as the practice) A PERSON OF INTEGRITY (the beliefs & practice are one)

  6. N E W S “To be a successful leader, you have to have integrity. Your word has to be everything you’ve got. You must have a moral compass, because as a leader, you are exposed more to the people.” - Charles Wang(T. Neff, Lessons from the Top, New York, 2001, p.330)

  7. “The King…shall not multiply horses for himself…nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself. Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book…and it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law…that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left.” (Deuteronomy 17:14-20)

  8. Moses knew the threat that power can have on a leader’s honesty and integrity: • he warned about the danger of greed (by having too many possessions) • he warned about the danger of pride

  9. Bible lessons on Honesty and Integrity: • people will not follow dishonest leaders • the followers will not be honest if the leader does not display honesty • the more responsibility a leader has, the more visible is his integrity, or lack of integrity • in times of crisis, a leader’s integrity becomes most evident • integrity has to be shown in actions, not in words • an organisation which has a code of integrity, will always create honest leaders. • A leader should always lead with humility, knowing that God is watching him.

  10. TEAM DEVELOPMENT “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17) A team = A group of individuals who may have different needs and experience, but they are working towards a common, unifying goal

  11. 1. The importance of teams “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour…and a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

  12. Interdependent tasks + Work that is related + Common goal +_____ TEAM “Therefore…I set the people according to their families…and half of my servants worked at construction, while the other half held the spears…and the leaders were behind all the house of Judah.” (Nehemiah 4:13)

  13. Everyone on a team has a separate and important function

  14. KEY P Policy Maker A Administration I Implementation LOA Line of Authority LOWR Line of Written Report I To See II To Judge III To Act AN EFFECTIVE LEADER DELEGATES TASKS L.O.A L.O.W.R III

  15. “For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them…”(Romans 12:3-6)

  16. 2. Selecting the team: How you select people is more important than how you manage them once they are doing the job…

  17. STRENGTHS OPPORTUNTIES WEAKNESSES THREATS INTEREST CLAIM LOW HIGH PARTICULAR (eg Donors, Bank) SECONDARY POWER KEY (eg Church Leaders) PARTICULAR (eg Government) INFLUENCE HIGH VERY HIGH

  18. Before He chose His disciples, our Lord spent the night in prayer

  19. “Joab… was over the army; Jehoshaphat…was recorder; Zadok…and Ahimelech…were priests; Seraiah was the scribe… and David’s sons were chief ministers” (2 Samuel 8:15-18).

  20. Give the team clear instructions… “Appoint elders in every town… an elder must be blameless… not overbearing, not quick tempered… not pursuing dishonest gain” (Titus 1:5-7)

  21. 3. The power of teams, and empowering teams… Noah built the ark, with the help of a team Nehemiah built the wall around Jerusalem with the help of a team Joshua knocked down the walls of Jericho with the help of a team And Jesus turned a small group of people with diverse backgrounds, into an effective team that would convert the world to their mission!

  22. But what was the secret of their success?

  23. 1st EXAMPLE OF TEAM INVOLVEMENT: The Leader is distant from the team and the task… 

  24. 2ND EXAMPLE OF TEAM INVOLVEMENT: The Leader is close to the task But he is distant from the team… 

  25. 3RD EXAMPLE OF TEAM INVOLVEMENT: The Leader is close to the task and the team… But communication is limited… 

  26. “Strategic Fit” 4TH EXAMPLE OF TEAM INVOLVEMENT: The Leader is involved with the task and the team… But something is still missing…  & 

  27. 5TH EXAMPLE OF TEAM INVOLVEMENT: The Leader is involved with the task and the team… AND ALL IS WITHIN THE FEAR OF GOD… 

  28. “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26) “Let the ME become the servant of the WE”

  29. “The leaders of the fathers’ houses, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, the captains…the officers…offered willingly…then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly, because with a loyal heart they had offered willingly to the Lord” (1 Chronicles 29:6-9)

  30. 6 empowerment 5 involvement 4 listening 3 recognition 2 feedback 1 information

  31. 4. The Importance of Unity in a team… “If you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!” (Galatians 5:15) “Your shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; your nobles rest in the dust. Your people are scattered on the mountains, and no one gathers them.” (Nahum 3:18)

  32. UNITY is very important in team work “All who believed were together, and had all things in common… and the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:44).

  33. “For as the body is one and has many members… so also is Christ… that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honoured, all the members rejoice with it”(1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

  34. MORE In numbers (Mark 4:1-20) UP In maturity (Hebrews 5:11-6:3) OUT In service (Matthew 25:31-46) TOGETHER In community (Romans 12:1-13) Through unity, the team members can grow and develop in 4 main dimensions:

  35. 5. Delegation Teams run best when the leader can delegate tasks and authority

  36. “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit?...The thing that you do is not good. Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself…You shall teach them the statutes and the law…moreover you shall select from all the people able men…and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. And let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, and every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you. If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will go to their place in peace” (Exodus 18:14-23).

  37. In order to delegate… • You have to trust your team members • Your team must understand their role and be able to perform • Your team must be given specific instructions • Your team must be encouraged • A leader delegates according to the member’s readiness & experience

  38. For Titus… • “But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: that the older men be sober…the older women…reverent in behaviour…admonish the young women to love their husbands…likewise exhort the young men…” (Titus 2:2-6). For Timothy… • “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers…do not neglect the gift that is in you…take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).

  39. 6. Effective Communication “Tychicus, who is a beloved brother, a faithful minister… will tell you all the news about me. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances and comfort your hearts” (Colossians 4:7-8)

  40. Lessons from the Bible on Communication • To motivate others to reach your goal, you must constantly communicate your message • Use a variety of communication methods: but the most effective is face-to-face • Effective leaders communicate through meetings with individuals, small groups, large gatherings, and they customise their approach according to the audience they are meeting with. • Leaders must share information, so that the followers do not hear incorrect information • During meetings, listen carefully to people and show them that you have heard and will take action

  41. 3. LEADERS MUST ALSO BE FOLLOWERS.. Follow the process of spiritual growth… Read and study your followers… Help them develop to their full potential Serve yourself by serving others

  42. Authority comes from the commitment to help others become wiser, and more capable; it does not come from a title or position. Leadership is born out of this helping relationship.

  43. A wise leader is like a coach who trains his followers to grow and become better people A coach is a ‘vehicle that transports people’. And so as a coach, you must transport people to higher and higher levels of personal, spiritual, and social growth.

  44. progress The trend Is always UP Re-assess & maintain decline fall progress TIME A wise leader always monitors the growth and decline of himself and also his team, and re-assesses, re-evaluates, and improves

  45. An effective follower… • Focus on progress, not perfection • No one is perfect • Give your team encouragement • Be the emotional bridge • Be a listening ear • Be a smile • Give an encouraging words • Give wise advice • Talk • Share • Console • celebrate

  46. 4. MANAGING CHANGE • Adapt to change • Adjust to change • Change can result in • opportunities • Change can result in • benefits
