  2. How Big and How Cold are you? How is their geography, climate, and natural resources connected to their daily life and/or jobs? • The United Kingdom is about the size of Oregon at 94,247 square miles. • Natural resources include oil, natural gas, iron ore, coal, petroleum, lead, zinc, gold, tin, limestone, salt, clay, chalk, gypsum, potash, silica sand, slate, arable land. • These resources allow jobs like for mining coal and other sources of energy. • Because of the rugged hills and low mountains geography for farmable land is arable land is 23.23%,permanent crops are 0.2%, and other is 76.57% which means there is little room for farmers. • Because the weather is temperate with moderated by prevailing southwest winds over the North Atlantic Current more than one-half of the days are overcast it means there is natural hazards of winter windstorms and floods which could mean that adults couldn’t get to their jobs.

  3. Why Do You Talk Differently? • The geography is connected to their daily lives because it actually influences its people. • At the physical level, populations develop characteristics for adaptation to their environments. • For example, sea level inhabitants are shorter on average than those living in the mountains, and residents in cold climates are likely to be lighter-skinned than their tropical counterparts. • Their vocabularies differ, too. Someone living in a verdant region may have many words for the subtle variations of the color green, while the language of a seagoing nation may include an unusually high number of nautical terms. • So not only does the geography influence jobs, it also influences people’s physical appearance.

  4. Developed or Developing? What does the economic data reveal about their quality of life? • The UK, a leading trading power and financial center, is the third largest economy in Europe after Germany and France. • Their GDP per capita is $36,700 and inflation rate is 2.8%. • Their exports cost about $481 billion and top 3 export partners are Germany- 10.9%, Netherlands- 7.9%, and France- 7.4%. • Their imports cost about $646 billion and top 3 import partners are Germany- 12.5%, China- 8.2%, and Netherlands- 7.1%. • This shows that they are a developed country.

  5. High or Low Standard of Living? • The life expectancy is males: 78.05 years and females: 82.4 years. • The population growth rate is 0.553%. • 99% of the people age 15 andover have completed five or more years of schooling • Unemployment is about 18.9% out of 63,047,162 people. • This shows that they have a high standard of living.

  6. Everybody is Different What do we need to know about these people to understand what makes their culture unique? • They speak English but with a British accent. • Their religions are: Christian (Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist) 71.6%, Muslim 2.7%, Hindu 1%, other 1.6%, and unspecified or none 23.1%. • They wear very much the same as any other modern western society - ranging from Jeans and Tee shirts (whether with designer labels or not) to full business suits for office work (if required). • The United Kingdom has many weird traditions like gurning, cheese rolling at Cooper’s Hill, Morris dancing, and maypole dancing. • The Art of the United Kingdom refers to all forms of visual art in or associated with the United Kingdom since its formation in 1707 so there isn’t just one form of art. • The traditional folk music of England has contributed to several genres, such as sea shanties, jigs, hornpipes and dance music and the United Kingdom supports a number of major orchestras which shows that they love music.

  7. Things Happening as we Speak How has this event affected the U.S.? Or how has the U.S. affected this event? • Lately there has been some nuclear weapon tests in the United Kingdom. • It has greatly concerned the United states. • United States and the United Kingdom have cooperated extensively on nuclear security matters. The special relationship between the two countries has involved the exchange of classified scientific data and materials such as plutonium. • The United States is trying to take action to stop the United Kingdom’s tests but the United Kingdom is part of the United Nations Security Council.
