  4. About Storage Virtualization

  5. Basic Storage Virtualization Slicing Combining Physical LUNs Physical LUN Virtual Drives Virtual Drive

  6. How FalconStor Storage Virtualization Works ESX-2 • Quickly create virtual volumes from physical disk resources • Physical LUN and virtual devices up to 16TB • Expand volumes as needed • Store VMDK files on virtual volumes • Securely assign volumes to servers through NSS interface ESX-1 FC or iSCSI Virtual disks Physical disks

  7. Thin Provisioning:Better Storage Utilization Application server sees virtual volume size • Create a virtual volume to match size of data provisioning request • Allocate a smaller amount of actual physical disk space • Additional physical space allocated automatically as needed • Reduces wasteful over provisioning of storage • Saves disk space and power consumption “800 GB” ESX-1 Virtual 800GB Physical 200GB Data A Green feature Thin provisioned SAN volume

  8. Storage Virtualization Benefits • Provides a quick and easy way to provision and share storage resources as needed • Works with and across any type of storage (SAS, SATA, SSD...) and any brand • Shared storage enables VMware advanced features (VMotion, VMware HA, Distributed Resource Scheduler) • Allows easy growth of virtual resources • Space savings through thin provisioning

  9. Storage Virtualization Demo

  10. Migrate Using Storage VMotion • No down-time migration using Storage VMotion • Move data from SAN or direct attached disk • Reuse old disk as VMDKs are moved ESX

  11. An Alternate Method • FalconStor Service Enabled Device encapsulates the physical LUN into a Virtual LUN without affecting data • Even the disk inquiry string is maintained • Enables all storage services Disk-inquiry-string Current physical disk Disk-inquiry-string Disk-inquiry-string After Data Service Enabling Disk-inquiry-string Virtual LUN

  12. Service Enabling Demonstration

  13. Data Integrity and System Recovery

  14. Enhancing Data Protection What can we do to enhance data protection?

  15. VMware Recovery with FalconStor Software • FalconStor software provides a set of tools to enhance VMware data protection • 100% transactional integrity of data for fast restores • WAN-optimized data replication to reduce bandwidth use by 90% or more • Integration with VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) • Physical-to-virtual support with SRM

  16. Application-centric Protection Why is application integration important? Because when you recover, you want your data to look like this And not like this

  17. Giving Names to Eggs Crash Consistent Data Transactionally Complete Data

  18. FalconStor Application Snapshot Director for VMware • The Application Snapshot Director for VMware designed to ensure transactional integrity of data • Data is not in a crash consistent state (it is 100% transactionally consistent) • No need for lengthy system/DB checking • Coordinates snapshot process between VMware and FalconStor application-specific and file system-specific snapshot agents • Runs on the ESX server • Integrates with Site Recovery Manager

  19. Where Do the Pieces Fit? ESX server VMware Service Console Application Snapshot Director is a separate virtual machine Snapshot Director Virtual Appliance Application-specific agents install within the virtual machine Virtual Machine Virtual Machine Virtual Machine Application Application Application Microsoft Exchange, OracleMicrosoft SQL Server IBM Lotus Notes/Domino, Sybase, Informix, DB2, SAP, Pervasive SQL Application Snapshot Agent Application Snapshot Agent Application Snapshot Agent File system Agent File system Agent File system Agent File system agent installs on the hosted OS Windows File System, Linux File System Network Storage Server provides virtualized storage and replication services FalconStor NSS OS OS OS

  20. Snapshot Sequence of Events ESX server • SD puts the application into a hot backup mode • Application holds up processing, flushes cache • Application agent informs file system agent • Agent ensures file system cache flushed to disk • SD initiates VMware snapshot • Transactionally complete snapshot taken across the virtual LUN • All systems released VMware Service Console 3 Snapshot Director Virtual Appliance 1 Virtual Machine Virtual Machine Virtual Machine Application Application Application Application Snapshot Agent Application Snapshot Agent Application Snapshot Agent 2 File system Agent File system Agent File system Agent 4 FalconStor NSS OS OS OS

  21. Storage Virtualization and SRM

  22. The Importance of SRM • VMware Site Recovery Manager is a critical disaster recovery tool • Provides automation of DR processes • Provides automation of DR testing • Provides reporting for proof of compliance

  23. Challenges for Site Recovery Manager Implementation • Site Recovery Manager does not move data by itself, it requires array-level data replication • Limited number of disk vendor certifications for SRM • Vendor Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) is platform specific • Need the same hardware on both primary and remote sites • Limited product certifications • Need to change the underplaying infrastructure at the primary site, the secondary site, or both • Breaks the virtualization promise of platform independence

  24. Integration with Site Recovery Manager • FalconStor Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) integrates FalconStor replication with Vmware Site Recovery Manager • FalconStor NSS provides replication engine • Virtual disk assignments are automatically coordinated with associated virtual machines with the help of SRA • Disaster recovery scenarios can be tested at any time • A TimeView snapshot image is created and mounted to a virtual machine being tested • The virtual machine is started • Recovery is validated and TimeView image removed

  25. Key Components of SRM integration with FalconStor DR Solutions VMware Virtual Center FalconStor Storage Replication Adapter coordinates with SRM, installs in Virtual Center Service Console Application Snapshot Director Virtual Machine Virtual Machine Virtual Machine Application Application Application Site Recovery Manager Storage Replication Adapter Snapshot Director Application Snapshot Agent Application Snapshot Agent Application Snapshot Agent ESX Application and file system agents File system Agent File system Agent File system Agent Network Storage Server provides replication services coordinated with SRM FalconStor NSS OS OS OS

  26. FalconStor Storage Virtualization Device • FalconStor NSS Gateway certified by VMware as a Storage Virtualization Device • Allows any storage on VMware Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) to be used with SRM • In effect, NSS extends SRM certification to connected disk • Increases storage array flexibility for VMware Site Recovery Manager, brings support to existing SAN • Allows SRM testing without breaking the replication stream

  27. NSS as Storage Virtualization Device Management data VMware ESX Server VMware ESX Server VMware ESX Server VMware ESX Server VMware Virtual Center with SRM VMware Virtual Center with SRM Data movement Enables SRM for any storage on VMware HCL Disk Vendor B Disk Vendor A

  28. SRMDemonstration

  29. The FalconStor SRM Advantage • Provide heterogeneous storage virtualization for VMware environments • Enables VMware DR deployments on any HCL certified storage platforms • Enable customers to use their current infrastructure to implement SRM and DR for VMware • Provides cost effective DR strategy implementation • TOTALLY Open Disaster Recovery protects infrastructure investment and provides flexibility

  30. Physical-to-Virtual Support with SRM

  31. Extending the Game • FalconStor can support Physical-to-Virtual recovery with Site Recovery Manager VMware ESX Server VMware ESX Server VMware ESX Server VMware ESX Server Physical Servers VMware ESX Server SAN Raw device mapping Data copy to secondary storage

  32. WAN Optimization

  33. Achieving Efficient Data Replication Deploy sub-block replication to move your data

  34. MicroScan WAN optimization 512 byte = empty disk sector • Applications and file systems write far more data to disk than actual changes • NSS scans the changes at a 512 byte level and replicates only the changed data • Avoids constant re-sending of duplicate data = data written by application or file system = sector with actual data change 512 byte Disk sectors A typical 8k write of data. Many systems send all 8k or more. NSS sends only the truly changed sectors.

  35. MicroScan WAN Savings Example • Actual user production data for Microsoft Exchange replication • 1300 users, hourly replication from CA to PA • High random-write nature of Exchange is well suited to MicroScan removal of duplicate data • Average WAN traffic reduction of 97% with no additional network equipment needed

  36. Solution Deployment Options • All FalconStor solutions are available in three forms NSS Gateway Appliance or Software Kit Virtual Appliance Storage Appliance • Server+storage in a single physical device • Pre-configured amount of storage • Built on top ofVMware ESX • Deploy via image to any certified server • End user chooses server hardware • Connects to third-party storage devices

  37. Summary • FalconStor has the most complete set of VMware provisioning and protection products in the industry • Network Storage Server virtualization provides full support for VMware advanced features • Data integrity agents provided • Integration with Site Recovery Manager • Optimized WAN replication
