International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) • ICGEB is an international, intergovernmental organisation conceived as a centre of excellence for advanced research and training in genetic engineering and biotechnology, with special regard to the needs of the developing world • It strengthens the research capability of its members through training and funding programmes and advisory services, and represents a comprehensive approach to promoting biotechnology internationally • This approach holds out the prospect of advancing knowledge and applying the latest techniques in the fields of: • Biomedicine, • Crop improvement, • Environmental protection/remediation, • Biopharmaceuticals, and • Biopesticides production

ICGEB Trieste PhD Course Activities Main activity of the Ph.D. Course is the experimental laboratory work, which is the basis of the Ph.D. Thesis One-week Introductory Course Attendance to the ICGEB Seminar Programme (>50 seminars per academic year) 12 Journal Club discussions related to seminars by invited speakers One practical or theoretical ICGEB Meeting or Course per year Attendance at the Annual ICGEB Symposium Checkpoints End of first year: discussion with supervisor, tutor and one other member of ICGEB staff End of second year: preparation of a research grant application and discussion with a Group Leader Third year: presentation of results at the Annual ICGEB Symposium Fulfillment of the specific requirements of the Institution where they are registered
