Definition “In Dual Immersion Programs,English-dominant and target-language-dominant students are purposefully integrated with the goals of developing bilingual skills, academic excellence, and positive cross-cultural and personal competencyattitudes for both groups of students." (Lindholm-Leary, 2001 pg. 30)

  4. Defining Characteristics The student population is comprised of 50% native-English speakers and 50% native Spanish speakers (the target language) In Kinder at least 80% of the school day is spent in the target language - Spanish. The scope of the program is K-5thgrade.

  5. Program Design 80% Spanish/20% English These ratios represent percentage of time spent teaching in each language. K-80/20 1st-80/20 2nd-70/30 3rd-60/40 4th-50:50               5th-50:50

Dual Language Immersion Program Overview The Dual Language Immersion program offers English speaking and Spanish speaking students an exciting, enriching and challenging educational opportunity. All students will learn to read, write, and communicate effectively in Spanish and English while achieving high levels of academic success. Students will have the bilingual skills and cross-cultural competencies needed to succeed in our multicultural society and global economy.

  11. Program Goals Achieve in all academic subjects according to district and state guidelines. Develop fluency in communication and literacy in Spanish and English without compromising either language. Cultivate understanding and appreciation of other cultures, inspire self-esteem, and strengthen positive attitudes among students, their families and the community

  12. Curriculum The program follows the District’s core curriculum and uses District-adopted materials. Grade-level standards are taught. The delivery of the lessons is taught by using one language at a time. Teachers are highly trained and receive continuous professional development in delivering lessons that are understood by all students.
