What You Need to Know From the Beginning • This is a 6 year commitment • Parent participation is a vital part of the program • Full immersion in Spanish instruction starting in Kinder—this includes homework (can be challenging for students & parents) • Teachers must have fidelity to program components—cannot change program due to parent wants/needs • If your child has speech issues this is not the program for them • Less than 300 schools out of 10,000 in California offer DLI programs.
What is Dual Language Immersion (DLI)? DLI is a six year academic program that develops bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism in English and Spanish by integrating English learners, English speakers, and bilingual students. The ideal class is comprised of 1/3 English-only students, 1/3 Spanish-only students, and 1/3 bilingual students.
El ser bilingüeabrenuevosmundos. Being bilingual opens you to new worlds.
Why Dual Language Immersion? • Second language best acquired by immersion through immersion in second language • Knowledge learned through one language facilitates acquisition of second language knowledge • Students will benefit from cognitive advantages with development of bilingualism and biliteracy • The optimal window for language acquisition is in the elementary years.
Benefits of Dual Language Immersion • According to research, bilingual & biliterate students outperform others on achievement tests • Increases job opportunities for many careers • Promotes critical and creative thinking • Promotes self-esteem, cultural awareness and sensitivity • Students fulfill language requirements for high school and college
Why Spanish? • It is the predominant second language in our area. • There are 21 countries spread across four continents using Spanish for business, government, and daily life. • Second most frequently spoken language in the U.S.
Myths About DLI • Learning two languages overwhelms, confuses, and/or delays acquisition of English • Native English speakers will experience academic and language delays if enrolled in dual immersion programs • Total English immersion is the best way for a young English language learner to acquire English
Research Shows… DLI models develop higher levels of bilingual proficiency.
Research Shows… Former English Learners’ Grade 11 Reading Achievement by Elementary School Program
Research Shows… • DLI students are successful in tests of reading and writing in both languages • By the time English speakers begin English reading in third grade, they performed at grade level and at least as high as English speakers instructed only in English • Higher levels of bilingual proficiency associated with higher levels of reading achievement
Research Shows… • DLI models close the achievement gap between ELs and native English Speakers. • DLI students scored on par with their peers in mathematics achievement • DLI students score average to high in social studies and science • DLI programs have the fewest high school dropouts
90/10 Model • The six year DLI program is based on a 90/10 model where the percentage of instruction in Spanish diminishes as the program advances through grade levels until it reaches 50% in 4th grade.
Language Usage in the Classroom by the Teacher • Kindergarten students are taught the majority of the day in Spanish by a Spanish speaking teacher • The English portion of instruction will be done by their partner teacher • There is a strict separation of languages during instructional time
Curriculum For the 2013-1014 school year all the curriculum taught will be aligned with the California State Standards and is virtually the same material used in our general education classes. For the 2014-2015 school year and beyond all the curriculum taught will be aligned with the Common Core Standards and will virtually be the same material used in our general education classes.
