  1. How might his working methods be useful to a Director? BERTOLTBRECHT

  2. Chapters • The Role of the Director • The Epic Play • The V-Effekt

  3. The Role of the Director • Brecht believed the director was not the only important figure throughout the production. The director, writer, designer and composer all played an equal role and influenced the direction of the play. • A director must involve everyone in the creative process and decisions have to be made collectively.

  4. The Epic Play “...the epic poet presents the event as totally past.” Brecht emphasised that theatre pieces were ALWAYS illusions of reality and NOT depictions of reality. To create this, a director must work with the set designer to create non-realistic backdrops. On the other hand however, Brecht would emphasise that a certain extent of realism be shown through the costume designs and props.

  5. The Epic Play and the Director One of a directors motivations for making a piece of drama is to leave the audience with a message. Brecht wanted the audience to be involved in heavy debate. Long after seeing the performance. He wanted them to take a stand against the oppression in society that his play’s demonstrated.

  6. How can a Director create this? Similar to Brecht, in order to get their message across, a Director could strip the characters/acting down to “bare bones” were two opposing sides of an argument are emphasised clearly. The acting is treated like a reconstruction, Brecht presented the action as if it had already taken place. The director should be making sure he is giving a report on events and the audience becomes OBJECTIVE, allowing them to make rational decisions and evaluations. IN THE EPIC PLAY, BOTH THE ACTORS AND AUDIENCE ACT AS OBSERVERS

  7. The Distancing Effect Brecht despised any form of audience connection with the characters. This was the evolution of the “Verfremdungseffekt.”The action on stage should appear distant, disconnected and un- relatable to the audience. Director must use any means necessary to establish this “distancing effect”

  8. The Distancing Effect-Audience Impact Directors should use the V-Effekt to leave the audience with food for thought. The V Effekt should make the audience want to make change in their world. If it appears that change is possible, then change can be attempted.

  9. How can a Director achieve this? • Allowing the audience to smoke, drink and spit on the floor. • Striking and contrasting sets • Use of music, harsh contrast between the lyrics and the action on stage. • Use of placards and short summaries, allowed the audience to concentrate on the subtle messages and not what was going to happen to the characters. THESE TECHNIQUES WOULD ALLOW THE DIRECTOR TO RECEIVE CRITICAL RESPONSES

  10. How can Brecht's methods help directors? • Special effects should not be used to avoid distraction. • Stage should be brightly lit, and equipment visible. • Musicians must be visible. New songs should be introduced by placard.
