  2. What is the purpose of Salah? Allah swt commands us, “Establish prayer for my remembrance…” [20:14] He also tells us, “remember me and I shall remember you…” [2:152] Module 1 – Circle 13a

  3. Why is Salah so important? Salah is one of the five pillars of Islam, and comes after the pillar of Shahadah. It is also the first matter that we will be questioned about on the Day of Judgement. The Prophet pbuh said: “The first thing to be reckoned with on the Day of Judgement will be the prayer…” (Abu Dawood) Module 1 – Circle 13a

  4. What are the names of the 5 prayers? Fajr - Morning, between dawn and sunrise Dhuhr - Mid-day or early afternoon Asr - Late afternoon Maghrib - Evening, around sunset Isha - Night, before going to bed Module 1 – Circle 13a

  8. Are there any times during the day when we cannot pray Salah? Sunrise - When the rim of the sun is first visible > until the whole sun is clearly in the sky. (About 15 minutes after sunrise) Midday (Zawal/Zenith) - When the shadow is shortest/sun is highest. (Actually only an instant, but give 5 minutes on either side) Sunset – The changing of the sun’s colour such that one can look directly at it.   Module 1 – Circle 13a

  9. What are some of the prerequisites of Salah? Al-Islaam (Salah is only accepted from a Muslim) Al-‘aql (Sanity. The insane is not held accountable for his/her actions) State of purity (having wudu or making ghusl to remove ritual impurity) Removal of Dirt (clothing should be free from impurities) Covering the awrah (The area of the body which must remain covered) Commencement of time (The salah must be prayed in its proper time and not a minute before) Facing the direction of the Qiblah (Towards the House of Allah swt) An-niyah (The intention for the prayer being prayed should be present) Module 1 – Circle 13a

The Call to prayer- Adhan The Prophet pbuh said: “O Bilal, call the iqamah for prayer: give us comfort by it” [Sunnan Abu Dawud] Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin `Abdullah bin `Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Sasaa Ansari: That Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri said to his father. "I see you are fond of sheep and the desert, so when you want to pronounce the Adhan, raise your voice with it for whoever will hear the Adhan whether a human being, or a Jinn, or anything else, will bear witness, in favor on the Day of Resurrection." Abu Sa`id added, "I have heard this from Allah's Apostle pbuh." [Bukhari] Module 1 – Circle 13a

  11. What does one say in the adhan, and what does it mean? Arabic Allahu Akbar (x4) Ash-hadu-anla ilaha illallah (x2) Ash-hadu anna Muhammad-ar Rasulallah (x2) Hayya alas salah (x2) Hayya alal falah (x2) (Fajr ONLY) As-salahtu khairum minanowm (x2) Allahu Akbar (x2) La ilaha illallah English Allah is the Greatest I bear witness that there is no diety except Allah I bear witness that Muahmmad is the Messenger of Allah Hasten to Prayer Hasten to eternal Salvation (Fajr ONLY) Prayer is better than Sleep Allah is the Greatest There is no god but Allah Module 1 – Circle 13a

  12. What should you say after you have heard the Adhan? Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever, after listening to the Adhan (for the prayer) says, 'O Allah, the Lord of this complete call and of this prayer, which is going to be established! Give Muhammad Al-Wasila and Al-Fadila and raise him to Al- Maqam-al-Mahmud which You have promised him,' will be granted my intercession for him on the Day of Resurrection” [Bukhari] Module 1 – Circle 13a

  13. Which direction should we face when we pray? We must face the Ka’bah, which is in Mecca. Allah swt says: “And from wheresoever you come forth then turn your face in the direction of the Masjid al-Haram. For indeed, that is the truth from your Rabb. And Allah is not unaware as to what you do.” (2:149) Module 1 – Circle 13a

  14. Do we have to make the intention to pray? The Prophet pbuh said: "Actions are judged according to their intentions." [Bukhari and Muslim] Module 1 – Circle 13a

  15. Should we stop remembering Allah swt after Prayer? Allah swt says: “When you complete your prayer, remember God all the time while standing, sitting, or reclining. When you are safe, say your prayers properly. It is a constant duty of the believers.” (4:103) Module 1 – Circle 13a
