  1. Physical and Chemical Changes

  2. Create a foldable Take a sheet of notebook paper and fold it in half hamburger style (horizontal) Leave two lines at the bottom for the title Fold the paper in half, just like a book Title the bottom “Physical and Chemical Changes”

  3. Title the Flaps on the Foldable Physical Change – a state of change where nothing new is created. Chemical Change – when one or more substances combine or break apart to form a NEW substance.

  4. Physical Changes • A physical change is a change in the state of matter • Changing from a solid to a liquid to a gas • Exp: Melting ice cream, wax hardening, evaporation • of water from clothes. • Sublimation: when a substance goes from a solid to • a gas (forming of frost from water vapor) • A physical change is a change in size or shape • Exp: tearing, dissolving, stretching, or wrinkling • Exp: dissolving sugar in water, stretching a rubber band, • wadding up a piece of paper

  5. Evidence of a Chemical Change • Remember to be a chemical change, a new substance has to be • created! Color Change: the chemical composition of the substance has to change. * Exp: Clothes change color when bleach is added, an apple turns brown when reacting to oxygen. 2. Temperature Change: when a substance is combined with Another substance and an increase or decrease of temperature occurs. * Exp: When wood burns to ash and gases, the temperature increases.

  6. Evidence of Chemical Change Continued 3. Formation of a Precipitate: When two solutions combine and Form a solid substance. The solid substance is a precipitate. * Exp: when carbon dioxide is combined with calcium Hydroxide, chalk is formed. 4. Formation of a Gas: When a solid or liquid substance are Combined, they may form a gas. * Indicators that a gas is formed: 1. formation of bubbles or fizzing * Exp: Vinegar is added to baking soda, bubbles appear
