Divergence in Energy: Halite-Sylvite Phase Composition

Explore energy divergence and phase composition in halite-sylvite pairs dropped to lower temperatures. Witness the expected compositional separation over time on the slopes of a widening solvus. Significant separation occurs within the first hour at 400°C.

  1. Halite-Sylvite ThermoconsolutionWalker, Verma, Cranswick, Clark, Jones, and BuhreAmerican Mineralogist The following slide show shows the divergence in energy and, hence, phase composition for halite-sylvite pairs that are suddenly dropped to a lower temperature. The compositional separation that occurs with time is expected on the flanks of a solvus that widens downward in temperature. Most of the incremental separation takes place in the first hour of the time series at 400 oC.
