  2. Why do an internship? • Provides you with real world experience • Employers prefer applicants that have work experience • Helps you decide what you do and DO NOT want to do

  3. A production engineer improves the efficiency of manufacturing processes • Use statistical analysis to determine optimum process settings • Excel and minitab are the major tools of the trade • Uses human intuition and actually experiences the problem • A production engineer is an engineering investigator

  4. E&J Gallo Winery • Located in Modesto • Family owned and operated since 1932 • World’s largest winery by volume and revenue • Makes their own glass • Produces the brands: Barefoot, Gallo, Carlo Rossi, Bartles&James, New Amsterdam (Vodka), E&J Brandy, Andre, Boone Farms

  5. What I did • Paperwork for the senior engineer • Met with line operators to help discover problems • Did an ‘A3’ on the champagne line

  6. An ‘A3’ is a critical thinking process • A way to organize thoughts on paper using the Define Measure Improve And Control (DMAIC) process • Helps you get to the true root of the problem • Helps convey your solution to other engineers

  7. Major discovery

  8. Internship largely successful • Helped resolve issues with the champagne line • Helped the company produce an extra 81,000 cases annually
