  3. USES • Snuff • Inhaled up the nostrils by Europeans • Pipes & Cigars • Puffed (mouth)

  4. USES Cont. • Chew & Dip • American farmers (became baseball players 1800s) • Tobacco leaf – molasses added for flavor • Plug (used by cowboys) • Cigarettes • Mid 1800’s were not popular • 1880 only 1% of tobacco used

  6. HOW CIGARETTES BECAME POPULAR • 1900’s movies became popular • Projection- enlarges images • Movie stars wanted to remain thin • Doctors recommended nicotine to remain thin

  7. HOW CIGARETTES BECAME POPULAR CONT. • 1932-1944 FDR is president & he used cigarettes • 1941-1945 WWII-Military (males) • Hero worship • Given cigarette breaks • Relief from duty caused many to use • 1961 – 80% of tobacco used in cigarettes

  8. HEALTH DANGERS • Nicotine - stimulant is NOT the cause of cancer • Used as a bug killer • Appetite suppressant; & increase cholesterol retention leading to arteriolosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) • Addictive & habit forming • Constricts blood vessels

  9. HEALTH DANGERS CONT. • Tar – Carcinogen (proven to cause cancer) • Cigarettes are inhaled and the lungs are coated with tar • One pack a day = one cup of tar in the lungs per year

  10. HEALTH DANGERS CONT. • Carbon Monoxide – poisonous gas • Ammonia – poisonous gas that clings • NitrogenSulfide – rotten eggs • Hydrocyanic Acid – cyanide, used in CA gas chamber • Formaldehyde – embalming fluid
