What was the XYZ Affair? • Adams wanted to smooth out the relationship and improve trade between France and the United States after we had refused to help them with privateers. • He sent diplomats to Paris • French Foreign Minister Talleyrand refused to speak with them
3 French agents did meet with the U.S. diplomats and said that Talleyrand would talk about a treaty if they gave them $250,000 and the French government a $12 million loan • Bribe! • The diplomats refused • When the findings of the trip were presented to congress the 3 French agents names were omitted and replaced with XYZ
What was the result of the XYZ Affair? • The U.S. government and people were furious • Federalists started to call for war with France • The U.S. and France in an undeclared naval war • West Indies • U.S. Navy expanded • Peace time Army created
