Southern CA and LOSH • Workers in So Cal comprise 2/3 of the state’s total workforce • So Cal accounts for 69% of California’s foreign born population • In some industries, such as garment, 90% of workers speak a language other than English and only 17% have above high school education • Half of LOSH staff is bilingual; several are native Spanish speakers and foreign born • LOSH has strong relationships with unions and community based organizations • Educational activities are developed in and with the community

Outreach and Education at: • Street corners (day laborers; with SoCalCOSH) • Mexican Consulate (Ventanilla de Salud) • Health fairs • Ethnic clubs • Via Spanish media In collaboration with worker centers, small businesses and unions and in support of ongoing campaigns -- by building the capacity of community organizations (e.g. health promoters network)

  4. How are materials developed? • Based on what we learn in interaction with the community—considering language and concrete needs over conceptual framework

  5. Lesson learned: Finding a setting for dialogue • What do we need to know? • Language • Literacy levels • Socio-economic pressures • Cultural frameworks • What do they need to know? • Health & safety hazards • Legal framework • Possible actions and resources
