  2. Watching the Whole Movie…

  3. In the beginning… 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.~ Genesis 1:1-3

  4. In the beginning…

  5. In the beginning… 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.

  6. In the beginning… 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. ~ Genesis 2:19-25

  7. In the beginning… *Represents perfect community, not equality

  8. In the beginning… 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.“ ~Genesis 1:28

  9. In the beginning… *Represents perfect community, not equality

  10. In the beginning… • Perfect Community within God • Perfect Community with God • Perfect Community and equality with one another • Perfect Community and harmony between God, humanity, and creation

  11. What’s the big deal? 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. ~Genesis 3:6-7

  12. First sin=eating of the apple What’s the big deal?

  13. What’s the big deal? 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.“ ~Genesis 3:8-10

  14. What’s the big deal? Before –Perfect Community After--Hierarchy

  15. Perfect Community with God was lost What’s the big deal?

  16. What’s the big deal? 11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" 12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”…16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." Genesis 3:11-12; 16 (NIV)

  17. What’s the big deal? Before-Equality After-Hierarchy

  18. Perfect Community with one another was lost What’s the big deal?

  19. What’s the big deal? 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." …17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. Genesis 3:14-15, 17-18 (NIV)

  20. What’s the big deal? Before-Harmony After-Discord

  21. Perfect harmony with creation was lost What’s the big deal?

  22. What is “sin?” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Genesis 3:6 (NIV) “Sin” is disobedience caused by a turning away from God whichresults in an over-turning (over- dependence upon) towards oneself and one another.

  23. Over-Turning in real life Over-Turning Towards One Another 1. Co-dependent 2. Enmeshed (results in loss of reflection) Over-Turning Towards Oneself 3. Aloneness (results in shame)

  24. Turning back towards God 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 51:17 (NIV) Repentance- “Metenao”-a turning back resulting in realizing and admitting our sinfulness

  25. Recognizing and admitting our sinfulness is our first step back towards God What’s the big deal?

  26. Strength in Brokenness True strength does not come out of bravado. Until we are broken, our life will be self-centered, self-reliant; our strength will be our own. So long as you think you are really something in and of yourself, what will you need God for? I don’t trust a man who hasn’t suffered; I don’t let a man get close to me who hasn’t faced his wound. Think of the posers you know—are they the kind of man you would call at 2:00 A.M., when life is collapsing around you? Not me. I don’t want clichés; I want deep, soulful truth, and that only comes when a man has walked the road I’ve been talking about. ~Wild at Heart
