Sign of the Times 5th Grade Unit Objective- Students will create a their names in American Sign Language in order to demonstrate their understanding and application of Line and Unity. • Daily Objective (day 1) • Students will discuss and then analyze how American Sign Language can be utilized to create their names through fingerspelling. • Production Benchmark • Today- After Mrs. Frock gives a demonstration, students will use mirrors to observe their hand signs and then begin to sketch them onto newsprint paper.

Sign of the Times 5th Grade Unit Objective- Students will create a their names in American Sign Language in order to demonstrate their understanding and application of Line and Unity. • Day 1 - Today we are going to: • Start class by talking with peers at our table and see what we may already know about American Sign Language (ASL). • Meet back as a whole class and discuss our findings. • Meet back with your group and talk about “Line” and why you think Mrs. Frock has chosen to incorporate Sign Language fingerspelling with our unit on “Line”. • Come together as a whole group and discuss our findings. • Watch online Sesame Street video on ASL http://www.sesamestreet.org/video_player/-/pgpv/videoplayer/0/cd297011-154e-11dd-8ea8-a3d2ac25b65b/signing_alphabet • Watch Mrs. Frock give a demonstration on how to sketch your hands for fingerspelling your name. • Gather supplies and begin to create hand sketches. • Clean up and dismissal from art class.

Production Benchmark • Today- After reviewing American Sign Language fingerspelling, Line, and Unity students will use mirrors to observe their hand signs and continue to sketch them onto their drawing paper.

Daily Objective (day 3) • Students will analyze how American Sign Language, Line and Unity can be utilized to create their names through fingerspelling. Production Benchmark • Today- After reviewing American Sign Language fingerspelling, Line, and Unity students will begin to draw their hands onto their final drawing paper.

Daily Objective (days 4, 5 ,& 6 ) • Students will analyze how American Sign Language, Line and Unity can be utilized to create their names through fingerspelling. Production Benchmark • Today- After reviewing American Sign Language fingerspelling, Line, and Unity students will use colored pencils and black permanent markers to create hands, fonts and lines onto their final drawing paper.

Sign of the Times 5th Grade Unit Objective- Students will create a their names in American Sign Language in order to demonstrate their understanding and application of Line and Unity. • Did you remember to include: • Fingerspelling and fonts of your name? • Did you carefully use Sharpie marker to outline your work and then erase your pencil marks? • Make sure to only use colored Sharpie for your name in the typical format that we use. • Don’t forget to use colored pencil for the hands and the background. See if you can try to add tints and shades to give your hands a more realistic appeal. • Most of all – Don’t forget to have a great time while creating this awesome project!
