Anthrax Scare Anthrax became such a threat that, “House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R, Illinois) October 17 announced that the House would close all of its offices for five days so they could be examined for traces of anthrax, and would reopen October 23”(Bioterrorism Fears Spread in U.S. as More Letters Containing Anthrax Spores Are Found...). Thankfully the scare died down relatively quickly. Following 9/11 America was faced with an Anthrax scare. Anthrax is a disease most commonly found among animals, and has a 20% chance of being fatal to Humans who come in contact with it. During the case to find who was mailing anthrax to members of Congress a main suspect committed suicide. This disease alarmed many Americans and even had people wondering if the same terrorist who where involved with 9/11 where involved with the anthrax letters. Americans were even more afraid at the governments lack of ability to protect the country from bioterrorism. Constantine, Alex
