  2. John 1:1-9 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

Exodus 3:13-14 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

John 8:56-59 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet fifty years old,” the Jews said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Dr. Lawrence Richards Each of these images, as noted, not only continues to affirm the full deity of Jesus, but tells us what it means for us that Jesus, the Son of God, chose to become man and live among us. Jesus is our bread, who sustains us daily. Jesus is our light, cutting through the shadows and illusions that darken this sin-cursed world. Jesus is the gate, the one door through whom we can go and find safety. Jesus is the Good Shepherd, who cares so much for the sheep that He was willing to give His life for us. Jesus is the resurrection and life; His vivifying (life giving) power is so great that He is able to bring life even to our mortal bodies, and one day will raise us to total renewal. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one can approach the Father except through Him. Jesus is the Vine, and as we remain in fellowship with Jesus His life flows into us as branches, enabling us to bear spiritual fruit.

  7. John 1:10-14 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  8. John 1:15-18 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ” From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.
