  4. EnMS – What is it? An Energy Management System (EnMS)… • Integrates active energy management into everyday business systems and procedures. • Drives continuous improvement of a site’s or organization’s energy performance. • Controls energy usage, achieves operating cost savings, and continuously improves energy efficiency. • A management system is: • Say what you do • Do what you say • Prove it • Improve it An EnMS can be implemented in many different ways. ISO 50001 is the international standard for EnMS and energy improvement

Company operational policy makes a difference International standards require company policies to systematize ongoing management and performance improvement in a particular area of operation. • Standardized systems enable companies to streamline processes, trim costs, earn and maintain market access, and boost their bottom line. • Every well managed company relies on corporate system standards based on industry standards, e.g., HR, purchasing, supply chain, operations, testing… Integration of EnMS into a company policy & culture is as critical as fiscal management, quality, safety…

Top management mandates an internal policy for improving energy performance. • Procedures & practices for systematic planning, tracking, & analysis of enterprise energy performance. • Engages & tracks all aspects of energy usage including equipment, processes, people, and supply. • The continuous process is resourced, financed, and reviewed on an annual basis. ISO 50001 An EnMS defined by an international body • International best practice for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system. • Developed to promote consistency among national energy management standards. • Shares same structure as existing management system models of continual improvement: quality (ISO 9001) and environmental management (ISO 14001) • Published in 2011 and updated in 2018 • 44 ISO member countries and 14 observer countries ISO 50001 is not a utility program design. It does not prescribe how to achieve the requirements.

SEM and CEI EnMS defined by CEE’s Minimum Elements • Developed to create consistency between emerging utility and implementer SEM/CEI programs across North America • Published in 2014 • Created by CEE’s Industrial SEM working group, which included utilities with existing SEM programs • Describes the minimum conditions an industrial company or facility should have in place to continuously improve energy performance. • CEE Minimum Elements is not a utility program design. It does not relay how to achieve the conditions. Most SEM programs are designed to help customers go well above and beyond the minimum conditions

ISO 50001 and SEM/CEI ISO 50001 and SEM Minimum Elements are complementary documents with different goals • CEE’s SEM considers minimum elements- as defined by NA utility programs • 50001 considers a comprehensive system- as defined by an international body • In addition: • 50001 requires additional “elements” that are not required by CEE • Most elements in both documents are similar but use different language • Those elements that are required by both documents are complementary Many Implementers and Utility programs are moving towards ensuring their programs are ISO 50001-compatible, whether or not they require all of the ISO 50001 “elements”

ISO 50001 and SEM/CEI ISO50001 and SEM Minimum Elements are not program designs They do not directly provide: • Guidance for designing a utility program • Tools for implementing a program • Resources to use while engaging a customer • Methods for measuring energy savings • Recognition for a customer There are very few, if any, publicly available utility SEM program design or implementation resources

  15. How does 50001 Ready help utility programs? The 50001 Ready program is designed to provide implementers and utilities with support that is not currently available, including: • Program design guidance • Resources, templates, samples • Tools • Attestation • Recognition No matter what type of program the utility or implementer currently runs or wants to add to their portfolio.

  16. 50001 Ready Program for utilities and implementers Objective • Create readily adoptable, easy-to-use resources for utilities and implementers that want to offer their customers access to a continuous energy improvement program. Provide self-attestation and recognition. 50001 Ready is: • Open source software tools and resources, designed to be enhanced by utilities and implementers and offered to end-users • Suite of resources to support utilities and implementers who want to work with customers in institutional, commercial and industrial facilities • Available to support ‘enterprise’ or multi-facility adoption • Recognition for self-attesting to conformancewith ISO 50001. The DOE Objective There are no certification requirement from third parties

  17. 50001 Ready Program • Provide tools, resources, and support to promoters and advocates of energy efficiency in the U.S. to help accelerate EnMS & ISO 50001 adoption • Tools will follow the ISO 50001 framework. • All tools are open source for co-branding and customization • DOE & LBNL will provide back office support for any initiative • Encourage U.S. companies to use DOE tools & resources to pilot an EnMS or to create an EnMS gap analysis • Pilot or analyze without commitment to certification • Benchmark company against international EnMS specifications • DOE will support these efforts with resources and training. • Encourage associations, integrators, service providers, and advocacy groups to reach out and stimulate the market • Get engaged, take actions, DOE will support your efforts! The DOE Approach Pathway to an ISO 50001 compliant EnMS DOE wishes to share all resources freely and support you in your efforts

Case Study: Four Seasons Produce Using 50001 Ready at a utility CEI Facility • Continuous Energy Improvement (CEI) and 50001 Ready: 50001 Ready helped confirm and solidify the persistence of existing CEI best practices. • Energy performance: 50001 Ready supported efforts to measure, monitor, and improve energy intensity by an additional 2.1%. • No- and low-cost savings: With 50001 Ready, ~25% of identified savings opportunities were affordable or free. Four Seasons Produce (Ephrata, Penn.) was introduced to 50001 Ready by the PPL Electric Utilities Corporation CEI implementer, Strategic Energy Group (SEG).

Using 50001 Ready to leverage utility programs • Leveraging utility incentives: Completing 50001 Ready in partnership with Focus on Energy led to additional cost savings. • 530,000 therms of natural gas and 1.6 million kWh saved annually: 50001 Ready helped Neenah trace savings to specific energy efficiency projects. • Replication of energy savings: Clarifying the source of savings enabled the mill’s energy team to install successful projects across the mill. Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s utility-funded efficiency program, introduced 50001 Ready to this specialty paper facility in Whiting.
