  2. DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE DREAMING OF BEING A DOCTOR OR FIREMAN WHEN YOU GREW UP?TAKE A MOMENT TO TELL YOUR FRIEND WHAT CAREER YOU DREAMED OF...

  3. Now think of some events in life that would prevent you from fulfilling your dreams as a child..

  4. There are some things that happen to us as a direct result of choices we have made. We call these ”Human Factors”.For example... If we had to smoke 20 packets of cigarettes a day and get sick with lung cancer, the disease would be there because of our smoking habit.

  5. There are 4 categories to Human Factors. Make sure you understand these terms below:

  6. This Includes different sickneses, illness and diseases that make you sick. Example: sexually transmitted diseases from unprotected sex, liver disease from abusing alcohol. These are unfortunate events that happen as a result of human error. Example: Burn accident from leaving a candle burning near a curtain and everyone goes to sleep OR Car accident from some drinking under the Influence of alcohol. A crisis is a emergency situation that causes great distress for the people Involved. Example: A teenager gets addicted to drugs , steals from his family To buy drugs, leaving them with financial problems because of the addiction. This is the term given to a great tragedy that causes mass devastation. Example: During wars, people kill other people, bodies are left causing Diseases for those still alive.

  7. Take a moment to complete Activity 1 and see if you can identify the human factors attributing to these events.

  8. Other Human Factors that cause ill health include:

  9. These include the emotional and mental aspects of being a human being. Sometimes the mind is affected by something and indirectly affects the Body. Example: Lack of Self Confidence could result in stress when preparing for exams, causing stomach ulcers and lack of sleep. This includes how people behave towards one another and the conditions they live in. Example: Violence between different gender groups, abuse OR rape of someone reslults in STDs and trauma. Some religious practices influence their followers health. Example: the Jehovah Witnesses would never allow a blood transfusion even if it meant death with out the blood. Our cultures influence what we believe is acceptable about how we treat illnesses. There are some cultural practices that could result in life-threatening outcomes. Example: Male circumsicion done incorrectly by untrained professionals could result in death. Sometimes people have different perspectives or viewpoints on the same thing. Example: One person might believe that eating meat is perfectally acceptable and another is a vegetarian because they believe its cruel to eat meat.

Explain why Faetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is an example of a social factor that causes ill health. • How could this condition have been prevented? • Do you think that changing the legal age to drink alcohol to 21 would change the habit of early alcohol abuse amongst teenagers? • State your opinion on what is needed to change bad habits amongst teenagers and habits around alcohol abuse.

  12. Search your newspaper to find TWO articles that show examples of TWO different Human factors. • In your group, complete a brainstorm in which you identify the human factor that could cause ill health. • Are any human rights being violated? Refer to the Bill of Rights? • What life style changes could be made to encourage good health?
