SCIAMACHY Validation Workshop Objectives and introduction Ankie Piters, KNMI
Why this meeting? Two reasons: • Status on currently available products: • What can we say about current quality/accuracy? • What information is still missing? • Assure manpower for continuation of validation: • Convince you that your efforts are needed • Offer you a structure and support (not financial )
Why should you? Validation of SCIAMACHY has been difficult, Products do not yet meet our expectations, improvement is rather slow, and new satellite instruments are coming up. But … • SCIAMACHY will continue performing measurements for ~5-10 years • Products with good scientific value will come out • We will have 5-10 years of global data with knownand good quality in the end You can benefit from this dataset, especially in combination with other ENVISAT and EOS-AURA instruments. But we need your help!
What can you do? Funding for validation is very limited. In spite of this, we ask you to: • Use the data in scientific applications, • critically assess their quality for your purpose, and • give feedback to product developers. In addition we should all: • Convince funding agencies, as individuals and as a group, that validation has not finished, it only just started
This workshop Today: • Information on status • SCIAMACHY • Ground processor • Products: operational and scientific • Time for specific questions: after each talk • General discussion (40 minutes) Tomorrow-morning: • Final presentations of GSVT
German validation effort • A lot of work has been done by German community • But: validation is not finished, it just started • A lot of work still has to be done by all involved countries, both on: • Product development and improvement • Quality assessment
Rest of the workshop Tuesday 13:40 – 17:00 & Wednesday 9:00 – 11:55 • Short sessions on a product-by-product basis • Individual presentations (max 15m) • Discussion time (min 15/25m): • Short presentation from session chair • Discussion on specific validation issues General discussion at the end (35 minutes): • Issues gathered during workshop
After the workshop • Presentations on web site: mid December Please give your presentation to Berit Kirchhoff • Summary report (PDF, also on web): end January • GSVT will also have their own report/website • We invite you to submit your validation papers to the ACP special issue “Geophysical validation of SCIAMACHY: 2002-2004” • Open for submission now, with direct (~4-6 weeks) on-line publication • Submission deadline is 4-2-2005
