  12. Discussion • Informal TileCal + LAr Meeting held at CERN ~month ago • TileCal: Phase 2 + 3 coordinators + subsystem experts + … • LAr: Phase 3 Barrel + Endcap coordinators + subsystem experts + PL + ... • Learned that external scintillators at IP are not an attractive option for LAr • At most 2-3 weeks available in Fall ’06 • Outcome: LAr will produce a document to be reviewed by TileCal + Institute Board • See attached document + questions at end of this talk Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  13. LAr Goals for Cosmic Runs (1/2)(M. Aleksa) • First of all the clear goal of the barrel phase 3 commissioning is to demonstrate that the detector can operate in a stable mode during months. • Full detector calibration • Demonstrate software calibration + db is working ! • Will start in February 2006 (as soon as the barrel cryostat is cold) • Needs to be fully operational before cosmic muons run starts • Pedestal, Ramps, Calibration pulses + OFCs • COOL/POOL db integration • Monitoring + Bad cells at calibration level • Bad physics signal shape • Define “bad” signals in Physics with seeking algorithms + monitoring • Cross check calibration level results with results from the installation, and cold commissioning in B180 Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  14. Barrel middle compartment Test-beam data S()/N 7 central cell Muon signal in barrel EM calorimeter Due to Accordion geometry, muons are reconstructed in middle compartment by summing two cells in . With 10000 events, muon signal can be measured with ~ 0.3% precision Note : S/N ratio too small in strip and back compartments Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  17. ATLAS Commissioning View: Main steps up to spring cosmics(G. Mornacchi + P. Perrodo – ATLAS Overview Week, Paris, October ‘05) • Intermediate steps • Individual barrel calorimeter partitions • Integration with DAQ (ROS system) • Event building and data recording • Individual DCS systems operational • Monitoring and analysis • E.g. local (at P1) analysis of data from a run • Infrastructure for local analysis • Detector software for analysis • Data bases: access • Surface proto-control room • Combined calorimeters • Common trigger distribution (LTPs, CTP) • Common central DCS (e.g. alarms) • Surface proto-control room • Combined barrel calorimeters, cosmic run (May 06) • Cosmic trigger • Analysis software Calorimeter Commissioning R. 20. BACKUP Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  21. LAr Goals for Cosmic Runs (2/2)(M. Aleksa) • Amplitude inter-calibration in  • Summing modules in  • Time inter-calibration • Energy/time rec. with OFC needs pulse vs 40 MHz clock phase • Cross-check relative timing of middle layer cell predicted at ~0.8 ns (calibration pulses + cables lengths, systematics, t.o.f.) • The pulse versus 40MHz clock phase will be delivered by the TileCal time reconstruction. We need an accuracy around 1.5ns. • This time phase (corrected for the time of flight of a muon from the IP) needs to be independent on eta and phi (i.e. independent of the Tile trigger tower) • Intercalibration of the timing of different TileCal trigger towers is very important. • Will be checked with the data of the TileCal September expert week. • LAr EM Positioning • ~ 0.025/8/12 in  using strips • ~ 0.025/10 in  with middle cells • Study ‘high’ energy events (above ~2 GeV) • Extract drift time from 32 sample events Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  22. LAr Data taking(M. Aleksa) • Amplitude inter-calibration in  • Per cell: /N/290 MeV • Uniformity: /<E> ~ 0.5% with 40000 /cell • Group cells in  (48)  1000 /cell • Time inter-calibration • 100 /cell, can check physics timing at 0.6 ns • LAr EM Positioning  to be investigated • Events above ~2 GeV  to be investigated • Drift time from 32 sample events  to be investigated G3 results: projective 0.042±0.005 Hz, pseudo-projective 0.153±0.010 Hz 100 µ/cell  106 full days(29) with 1.0 GeV Tile threshold, =±0.1, =120.1 projective 0.027±0.004 Hz, pseudo-projective 0.098±0.008 Hz  165 full days(45) with 1.5 GeV Tile threshold(3840 top cells) • At least 100 days of data-taking necessary to obtain useful results • Our preferred trigger would be single-tower trigger (on bottom modules) • Then we could in principle take data with only 2 trigger board (sharing with EC possible)! Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  23. Questions from LAr to TileCal • Is it possible to trigger and read independently the Tile barrel and extended barrel(s)? • Answer: Trigger: Yes, it is possible. A cable / splitter would be needed to split the LB/EB signals from the LVL1-Calo patch panels to two separate Chicago transition modules. Readout: Yes. The ROD readout is grouped by TTC partitions, and LB/EB are separate partitions. Event building would be necessary. • It might be useful to trigger on the barrel in order to have projective muons in the LAr endcap. • Answer: Could be difficult, required LB+EB to be in final position. During many periods in ’06 the EB’s are scheduled to be moved back and forth in z for muon big wheel installation etc. Some “quiet periods” should be checked. Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  24. Questions from LAr to TileCal (cont.) • LAr plans to have 4 experts on call (Front End + cooling, Backend + Online, DCS + interlock, Monitoring + offline), can a similar effort be provided by the TileCal group over a long period while some work will have to be done on the extended barrels? • Answer: Comments invited from all TileCal members + Institute Board • Should dedicated expert meetings / discussion start before the end of the year? • Depends on positive answer from TileCal. Last dedicated meeting was very productive. Useful to coordinate with ATLAS weekly commissioning meetings. • Question to LAr: Help with manufacture of 48 intermediate trigger cables + connectors in USA15 from LVL1-Calo Patch Panels to coincidence boards? Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  25. Summary - Todo • Complete TileCal Phase 1 commissioning • Discuss Questions from LAr • Prepare reply • If positive, prepare plan with TileCal Work Package Managers for status + needs for Spring 2006 cosmic ray run • Could be in form of short document • Include requirements for central services • TDAQ, HLT, Central DCS, etc. Calorimeter Commissioning R. Teuscher

  26.
