  1. The Outer Planets …and other cool space stuff!

  2. The OUTER PLANETS Asteroid Belt The Outer Planets The Inner Planets Mars Earth Mercury Venus Uranus Saturn Neptune Jupiter • These FOURplanets are the FURTHESTFROMthesun. • ~The Outer Planets are called the “GASGIANTS”. ~ very COLD ~ Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, & Neptune ~ very LARGE with very DENSE atmospheres ~ made almost entirely of GAS (mostly hydrogen & helium like the sun) ~ strong GRAVITATIONAL force keeps gases from escaping ~ ALL have RINGS ~ALL have MANYMOONS!

  3. JUPITER • Largest planet • Greatestmass • Manystorms • GreatRedSpot - like a hurricane & much larger than Earth! • AT least 52moons! • Explored by unmanned space probes: ~Voyager I & II and Galileo

  4. SATURN • Secondlargest planet • HUNDREDSOFRINGS- ~ made of ice & rock • Lessdense than water! (would float in water!) • AT least 30moons! • Explored by Voyager I & II

  5. ~ URANUS ~ • Rotates onitsside! • Blue - due to traces of methane gas in atmosphere • At least 21moons! • Explored by Voyager II

  6. Visible clouds & storms At least 11moons Photographed by Voyager II & Hubble Space Telescope NEPTUNE

  7. PLUTO • PAST Neptune …so VERY FAR from our sun! • Smaller than Earth’s moon • Solid surface (NOT gassy!) • Photographed by Hubble Space Telescope • NOT a planet – NOW called a “DWARF PLANET” • One moon? Or double planet?

  8. MVEMJSUN *Use this acronym to help you remember the ORDER of the planets! My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Noodles

  9. Comets, Asteroids, & Meteors • COMETS - “Dirtysnowballs” ~chunks of ice & dust ~travel in elliptical orbits around the sun! • ASTEROIDS- objects in orbit around the sun that are too small to be called planets ~ most are in the “ASTEROIDBELT” between Mars & Jupiter (separates the Inner and Outer planets) • METEORS - chunks of rock & dust that enter Earth’s atmosphere ~ usually burnup ~ ones that fall to earth are called “meteorites” ~ Meteor“showers” come from dust released by comets as they travel through our solarsystem and Earth travels through the bits and pieces left behind. We call them shootingstars, but they are NOT stars.
