Celebrating 20 Years of ASACCU The first meeting of the Association for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities was held as a pre-conference session at the 1999 NASPA convention in New Orleans on March 27, 1999. For the next 20 years, ASACCU has met annually at different Catholic colleges and universities to reflect together on the work we do as student affairs professionals and on how to connect that work to the context and mission of our institutions. But the story actually began in 1990…

Celebrating 20 Years of ASACCU …with the publication of the apostolic constitution Ex corde Ecclesiae… …which asked Catholic universities to connect our professional practice more intentionally to our Catholic identity. Research conducted in 1994 showed we wanted to do this but didn’t exactly know how.

Celebrating 20 Years of ASACCU As student affairs professionals have done since the beginning of our profession whenever we were faced with new challenges, we came together to learn from each other. That first coming together was ISACC…the Institute for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges…held each summer at John Carroll University (OH) from 1996 to 1999.

From ISACC to ASACCU The founders of ASACCU met at ISACC. ISACC was a summer institute participants attended once. By 1999, over 220 professionals had attended ISACC and wanted an opportunity for their conversation to continue annually. ISACC became ASACCU in 1999.

ASACCU’s Founders Were All Vice Presidents of Student Affairs Who Were Wrestling with These Issues on Their Own Campuses ASACCU’s Founders Are: • Sandy Estanek • Bob Friday • Colleen Hegranes • Bob Pastoor • Greg Roberts • Richie Salmi, S.J. • Linda Timm They are all here to celebrate ASACCU’s 20th Anniversary!

In the Beginning, ASACCU was a Simple Organization with the Founders Sharing Roles, Agreeing to Host Conferences on Their Own Campuses, and Acting as a Conference Planning Committee.

But by ASACCU’s 10th Anniversary in 2009, the Organization Had Matured with a Constitution and By-laws and Was Led by an Elected Board of Directors. Maryellen Gilroy was elected Chair of the ASACCU Board in 2009. Kathy Byrnes was elected Chair of the ASACCU Board in 2015.

We Have Had the Support of Partners such as the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities Former ACCU vice president Dr. Michael James (middle) was awarded ASACCU’s first Founders Award in 2005 to recognize ACCU’s support for ASACCU. That support has continued with retiring ACCU president Dr. Michael Galligan-Stierle, who is keynoting this conference, and will continue with incoming ACCU president Fr. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M. (left), who is also here.

Through Our Collaborative Efforts, ASACCU Has Made a Difference in Catholic Higher Education and on Our Individual Campuses That collaboration with ACCU and with JASPA, the Jesuit Association of Student Personnel Administrators, led to the publication in 2007 of The Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities. A second edition with diagnostic queries for assessment was published in 2010. The Principles document remains one of ASACCU’s lasting contributions to Catholic higher education.

That Collaboration Has Also Produced Scholarship that Assists Student Affairs Professionals in Our Work in Catholic Higher Education Published in 2017 Published in 2008
