  2. Engagement or Not? Let’s take a peek at this student in class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3W_4Y0lOzg

  3. Clearly no engagement! • Is there any level of participation from students in the lesson? How much? • How engaged in the lesson are the students around their sleepy classmate? • What are the feelings students are having towards their classmate? • How are the students treating their classmate? *How can the teacher better engage her students?

  4. How can we engage? Are students literally falling asleep in our classes? NO! The point is that can the lack of engagement be masked by other things? For example: Not paying attention in general Fidgeting Day dreaming Asking for a bathroom pass (Teachers: Insert your way students best avoid learning here!)

  5. How could the teacher better engage her students? • Shoulder Partners • Turn and talk. • Be ready to share !

  6. ____ _ ____ _________ • Let’s learn and talk more deeply about how we can unleash the full potential of cooperative learning.

  7. _ ___ _______ ______________ Students can answer: “Does one doing well help others?” “Does task completion depend on everyone doing their part?

  8. _ ___ _______ ______________ How can teachers build this positive interdependence? *Team Goals *Team Rewards *Group Grades *Structures

  9. _ ___ _______ ______________ What does this mean? *Students have an understanding of outcomes. *It is natural for them to value cooperation with others

  10. _ ___ _________ _____________ Students can answer: “Is the performance done without help?” “We know someone will see our performance.” “We know the performance will be required.”

  11. _ ___ _________ _____________ Individual: Each student is responsible for their learning, but they are accountable to perform this learning within their team’s structure. This makes students try harder.

  12. _ ___ _________ _____________ Public: When students know they must perform, their height of awareness increases. Students also know they can rely on teams if they don’t understand.

  13. _ ___ ____ ____________ Students can answer: “Is the participation equal?”

  14. _ ___ ____ ____________ How can teachers build upon this structure?

  15. _ ___ ___________ __________ Questions to ask: What percentage of students are overtly interacting with each other at once.

  16. _ ___ ___________ __________ . Reflect on: Whole class discussion: Q & A- About 3.3% engagement Group Discussions: At any moment, about 1 out of 4 out 25% engagement Timed Pair Share Structure: At any one moment, we would see 50% engagement.

  17. Why Cooperative Learning? • Easy to implement in any subject or skill. • Students benefit from social structures, now more than ever. • Students benefit from feeling supported by each other vs. competitive. • High energy, vs low energy involvement in classrooms. • Increased levels of engagement.

  18. ____ _ ____ _________ Now let’s use our Active Expression Clickers. Text in your answers. Question #1 Which of the four PIES do you think is most important? Question#2 How can you use a new strategy in your classroom tomorrow?
