My power point is about polygamy. By: Lwe lah. Thesis. Polygamy is an important part of Utah history because were polygamists, and some still are today. It also caused a lot of fights between Mormons and non-Mormons. Polygamy started.

  1. My power point is about polygamy. By: Lwe lah

  2. Thesis • Polygamy is an important part of Utah history because were polygamists, and some still are today. • It also caused a lot of fights between Mormons and non-Mormons.

  3. Polygamy started. At first polygamy was not openly practiced, but an apostle, name Orson Pratt made a speech, for members of the Mormon church and its leaders to marry additional wives.

  4. Separate wives • The wives usually lived in separate homes, but sometime they lived in the same house. • Sometime the wives lived near each other. • The husbands sometime will visit his wives, and he have to go to one house and then to another.

  5. Wives take responsible • The wives have to take responsibility for the house works and their children.

  6. Teaching • Some other religions sent teachers to come to Utah to teach a lot of stuff. • The teachers not only teach the children about math and other subjects, but they taught them about polygamy. • The teacher told the children about how polygamy was bad and evil.

  7. The teachers • The teachers had been sent to teach the children but also to teach them about polygamy. • Two teachers were who were sent were Daniel Sylvester Tuttle and Reverend Lawrence Scanlan. Reverend Lawrence Scanlan Daniel Sylvester Tuttle

John Taylor • John Taylor served in the territorial government for over twenty years. • He told the men that it would be better to keep practicing polygamy in hiding and live their religion, and than go to prison. • John Taylor, he was a Mormon church president and died while hiding underground because he was a polygamist.   9. Woman in Utah vote • At first the women in Utah could not vote in elections. • Some thought that if women in Utah can vote, they might vote to stop the plural marriage. • The women voted to keep polygamy rather than stop it.

  10. Man went to prison. • The men went to prison because of plural marriage. • The men won’t give up the plural marriage, so they went to jail. • The men who went to prison, abandon his wives and children. • They’ll bring musical instruments along with them while they’re in prison.

  11. Underground • The church leader and members went into hiding, which they called the “underground”. • They went traveled to eastern states and other place. • They went hiding because they were to avoid arrest or testify.

  12. Some Mormon join Democratic party. • Most Mormon wanted to joining the Democratic party. • The reason they wanted to join the Democratsis because the Republican party had been responsible for trying to end polygamy.

  13. State guarantee religious freedom. • The state guarantee religious freedom for all religions in Utah. • It was because the Utah government had been working with their own religious. • The state don’t want them to cooperative with their religious, so that why the state have to guarantee religious freedom.

  14. Ended the plural marriages. • The plural marriages in Utah had to end. • The people in Utah have to end the plural marriages, because to help the Utah Territory achieve statehood. • The polygamy didn’t stop by than, so the plural marriages didn’t end.

  15. Declared to stop the polygamy. • The were a lot of people declared polygamy to stop, and there were also a person who declared polygamy to it was Wilford Woodruff. • He wanted the polygamy to stop, so he declared the polygamy to stop. • The plural marriage stop, so he was really glad but only for a while.

  16. Did the polygamy ended. • The polygamy didn’t end altogether. Some of the people who are in plural marriage, they didn’t practice polygamy anymore. • The people who stop practice polygamy, they join in different religion. • There are still some people who practice polygamy here in Utah today.

  17. Conclusion My topic is important to Utah, because it was took place in Utah. Polygamy kept Utah from becoming a state for a long time.
