2. Algebra Problem Pan Balance Problem 5(-3x – 2) – (x – 3) = -4(4x + 5) + 13 4 First you distribute the 5 to (-3x – 2). The problem will look like this after distributing the 5. -15x – 10 – (x – 3) = -4(4x + 5) + 13 4 Next you distribute the -4 to (4x + 5). The problem looks like this after this step. (-15x – 10) – (x – 3) = (-16x - 20 + 13) 4 Then you add the -20 and 13 together. (-15x – 10) – (x – 3) = (-16x -7) 4 Next you multiply the 4 on both sides of the problem.

3. Algebra Problem Continued… The problem should look like this after multiplying the 4 on both sides of the Problem. -15x – 10 – (x – 3) = -54x – 28 Then you can add x – 3 to -15x – 10. The problem should look like this when you are done. -16x – 7 = -54x - 28 After that you can add 7 to both sides of the problem to keep it balanced. Your answer should be… -16x = -54x - 21 Next you add 54x to both sides of the problem. You should come to … 38x = -21 Lastly, divide by 38 to solve for x. x = -21/38
