  1. CURRENT STATUS OF ENERGY SECTOR IN POLAND ANDR&D PROJECTS IN NUCLEAR POWER Stefan Chwaszczewski Institute of Atomic Energy, Świerk, Poland

  2. Energy – strategic factor for societies development • Access to energy of appropriate quality, quantity and price; • Environmental protection in use and processing of energy.

  3. Environmental protection - especially in Europe

  4. Density of energy consumption in region or country Country or region toe/km2 Poland 302 Europe without Russia 364 UE(25) 461 Midle East 92 North America 124 South America 32 Asia and Oceania w. Russia 58 Russia 43 Africa 11 World 72 Source: International Energy Annual 2004 – US DOE EIA 2007

  5. Pollution distribution in Europe

  6. World fuel resources

  7. Crude oil – production and consumption in regions Source: International Energy Outlook 2006 – US DOE

  8. Current situation in energy sector in Poland (2004) and EU(15)

  9. Fuel resources and consumption in Poland

  10. Forecast of electric energy consumption in Poland Source: Energy policy in Poland up to 2025 year

  11. Projection of the system load and planned net capacities of the existing system sources Nuclear Power Source: Duda M., Marecki J. Why there is a necessity to build nuclear power plants in Poland? NPPP 2006

  12. Conclusions: • Forecast of greater dependence of theeconomyof Poland from import of the gas and the oil – the greater economic and political dependence from exporters of these fuels; • Forecast is the increase of consumption of electrical energy. For the needs shut down of the used up and not fulfil norms of the environmental protection plants it is necessary the considerable development of new electric plants; • European Union introduces more and more restrictive norms for the environmental protection – limits of the issue SO2, NOx, CO2 and other harmful compounds; • We propose:

  13. Reduction of the coal use in the electricity generation and it replacement with nuclear power plants – energy safety, environmental protection and economy; • Utilization of the coal to generation of liquid and of gas fuels with low emission technology: using high-temperature nuclear reactors.

  14. R&D program in nuclear power: • Participation in nuclear power development in Poland: personnel training, expertises, documents for public information, tools for analysis of nuclear facility influence to environment, tools for on service inspection; management of spent fuel and radwaste; • Development of high temperature nuclear reactor technology and nuclear fuel technology for this reactor type. The aim of these works are desing of HTR and fuel in Poland; • R&D in the field of IV generation of reactors: transmutation, partitioning and ADS (accelerator driven system).
