  2. Simple Sentences • A simple sentence is a complete thought. It has a subject and a predicate. • The yellow pencil is very sharp.

  3. Simple Sentences • Sometimes there are compound parts to the simple sentence. • The yellow pencil is very sharp and could hurt you. • The yellow pencil and the orange pencil are very sharp.

  4. Compound Sentences • A compound sentence is one or more simple sentences joined together with proper punctuation. • The yellow pencil is sharp, and I will use it to write my paper. • (If you ignore the conjunction, you’ll see two simple sentences that would be strong enough to stand on their own.)

  5. Identifying the Differences • Can you find two complete thoughts by covering up parts of the sentence? If so, it is a compound sentence! • Draw arrows to show connections between predicates and subjects. • Try out some samples on the next slide…..
