Quick overview • Vikings, including Leif Eriksson began exploring and settling as early as 874 AD • Europeans began travelling to Asia to spread Christianity, Open up Trade Markets, and Learn about their culture • Portugal, with new technology, was able to find a Route to Asia by sailing around Africa, opening up trade to Europe • Trade with Asia led to more countries searching for Asian Markets, but also increased the Slave Trade

Columbus Day • Christopher Columbus sets out to find a westward water route to Asia • Columbus promised King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella: • Great Wealth and Riches • New Land and Territory • The Spread of Christianity • Columbus set sail on the Nina, The Pinta, And Santa Maria on August 3rd 1492 with 90 men and a years worth of supplies

Was he a Hero? • As the Voyage Seemed endless Columbus’s Crew began to talk of mutiny so Columbus made a deal and offered a reward to the first to discover land • Columbus’s Voyage spotted land he believed to be Asia on October 12th, 1492 and claimed San Salvador and Hispaniola for Spain • Columbus would begin trading with the Indians he encountered and would make 3 more trips back to what he thought was Asia

Here we Go… • Columbus’s voyage started a new Era of Exploration and Communication between America and Europe • However as Spain and Portugal began to fight over the new lands, Pope Alexander the VI created the LINE OF DEMARCATION to divide the Atlantic Ocean between them • Since the Arrangement favored Spain, the Treaty of Tordesillas moved the line 800 miles west

Gellin’ like Magellan • Amerigo Vespucci would Explore the coast of present day South America and proved that this land was NOT Asia • Vasco Nunez de Balboa set out to prove the existence of another ocean farther west and helped discover the Pacific Ocean • Ferdinand Magellan organized a crew and wanted to completely CIRCUMNAVIGATE the Earth • Though Magellan would be killed, his crew Successfully made it around the world

A BAD Exchange • As information about America Grew the Columbian Exchange began to change worldwide trade • The Columbian Exchange Introduced new American goods and crops to Europe and European crops and Animals to America • The Europeans also unintentionally introduced new diseases to the Americas which would wipe out entire populations • New Trading Patterns led to the exchange of raw materials, manufactured goods, and slaves
