  2. Time Use Surveys Time Use Surveys are potentially a very rich source of data on: • how much time people spend on various tasks • when they spend time on different tasks • how tasks are divided between different groups • plus broader measures such as satellite accounts

  3. An example Time spent on child care in the UK • used 2000 UK time use survey data • looked at time spent on childcare activities as well as time spent with children • differences between women and men and by age of children • difficult to identify who is ‘responsible’ for children at any time

  4. Other uses • How long do women and men spend on paid work and unpaid work? • When do different groups start and finish work? • How much time spent on voluntary work? • How much genuinely ‘free’ time?

  5. Discussion Many countries have now collected at least one set of time use survey data. How have the data been used in your countries? Good examples or even what to avoid!
