What should we call you? • Mrs. Haseltine • I would like permission to call each of you by your first name. If this is not acceptable, please let me know.
Why is the syllabus soooo long? • To show you how I teach and give you the information about what's important for you to know. • Some of it is required by the state
How do you expect assignments to be formatted? • We will go over that right now.
How tough are exams? • All exams will be automated with SAM (our testing software). Test Questions types • There will be matching vocabulary questions. • There will be lab type questions • There will be a practice test to show you the format • I do NOT grade on the curve • Make up exams are taken for 80 points on the last day of class only.
Will I have to say anything out loud in this class? • I know that some of you are terrified of being called on to answer a question or offer an opinion.
Does anybody really care if I come late or leave early? • Absolutely. • I will be here on time. • And I expect you to do the same.
What about cell phones? • You may have them. • They need to be on silent or vibrate. • Please do not allow them to ring during class. • If it happens, gather up your things and leave. You are finished for the day. • DO NOT ANSWER OR CARRY ON A CONVERSATION DURING CLASS. • If there is an emergency…let me know and you will have an excused absence.
How will I know what's important in this class? • The real question here is:Will you tell me what I need to know so that I can do well on the tests and get a good grade?
What if I have a question? Office hours are OK, but you look sorta scary. • I am NOT scary! • I just don’t know the meaning of ‘a little bit’--that is my passion coming out…I WANT you to learn. Better I care too much than not at all, right? • I know that research indicates students hesitate to talk to teachers, even when they want to. • I hold office hours because I want to be available. • E-mail is a way to talk to me. • Phone calls work, too
What if the weather is bad? • If the weather is bad enough classes will be cancelled. • Listen to channel 5 and FM 100 • I think those are the ones notified first.
