Definition yo! • Energy required to remove electron from atom in gas phase • Always positive • Measured in kJ/mole • 1st, 2nd, 3rdionization energies • Energies required to remove 1st, 2nd, 3rd electrons respectively because effective nuclear charge is higher as more electrons are removed. The same amount of positive charge is divided among less negative charges.
Group Trends • Decreases as it goes down • Attraction between nucleus and outer shell decreases so less energy is needed • Electrons repel each other so they are easier to remove • Electrons closer to the nucleus are shielding the positive charge form reaching further away electrons • Hydrogen has an especially large drop to Lithium • Attractive forces between Hydrogen electron and Hydrogen nucleus are large
Period Trends • Increases as it goes from left to right • Halogens are better suited to gain electrons rather than to lose electrons Exceptions: Nitrogen to Oxygen (Group 5 to Group 6) • Electron-Electron repulsion between electrons in the same orbital is higher than electron-electron repulsion between electrons in different orbitals. Therefore, ionization energy is lower for Oxygen than it is for Nitrogen.
