  2. Passive Reading vs Active Reading • Passive • Moving eyes over pages • Mindlessly turning pages • Getting to end of something and not knowing what you read. • Active • Being “in the moment” with the text. • Interacting with the text.

  3. What are the Types? …to other texts The Current Text You are Reading …to yourself …to the world

  4. In other words.. • Text to text. • Text to self. • Text to the world.

  5. HOW Do You Do This? • Read actively! • Promise self to ENGAGE in the text. • Adjust pace accordingly. • What relevance do you see to this text? • Annotate those connections in the margin. • Statements • Questions

  6. Writing in Margins • Annotations should be written in the margins. • NOT highlighted. • NOT simply underlined. • Something powerful about reading something, then THINKING about it just enough to decide WHAT to write in the margins. • That process is cut short when all you do is highlight or underline.

  7. Let’s Practice Middle school age. Vietnam War going on. Protesting? Other protesting – carrying signs. Students protested Iraq War. Protest = free speech? Sued – case to SC

  8. Students win case Right to protest continues in school ** Controversial decision. Many unhappy. As adults continue to fight for rights
