  2. The Beginning • Pearl Harbor • Doolittle Raid

  3. The Philippines • American Forces are overwhelmed by Japanese forces in the Philippines. • The US Navy, weakened by the Pearl Harbor attack could not move to support their troops. • US troops are captured and forced to march to a relocation center. • The forced march is called the Bataan Death March.

  4. The Battle of Midway • June 4th-June 7th, 1942 • Turning Point in the War in the Pacific • US sunk 4 Japanese Aircraft Carriers and a destroyer, permanently crippling the Japanese Navy.

  5. Island Hopping Campaign • The American plan was to “hop” from island to island in order to get close enough to bomb Japanese factories.

  6. The Battle of Guadalcanal • Aug. 7th-Feb. 9th, 1943 • American Casualties 7,100 • Japanese Casualties 31,000

  7. Battle of Leyte Gulf • Oct. 23rd-Oct. 26th, 1944 • Largest Naval Battle in History

  8. Battle of the Philippines • 1944-1945 • Starting with the Battle of Leyte Gulf ending when the Japanese surrender. • Bataan Death March

  9. Iwo Jima • Feb. 19th-Mar. 26th, 1944 • Some of the fiercest fighting of the war. • Black Volcanic Sand

  10. Okinawa • April – June of 1945 • Called the “typhoon of steel” • Japanese Military Casualties 110,000

  11. Kamakazi • “Divine Wind” • A tactic used by the Japanese to hurt American military ships.

  12. FDR Dies • Franklin D. Roosevelt • April 12th, 1945 FDR dies of a Stroke. • Truman Assumes Presidency

  13. Manhattan Project • Code name for the development of the atomic bomb for the US. • Robert Oppenheimer was the leader of the scientists working to develop the atomic bomb.

  14. The Decision to Bomb • President Truman decided to bomb the Japanese instead of invading the mainland. • Many historians have debated whether or not the US should have bombed the Japanese. • Huge civilian casualties were expected with both plans.

  15. Atomic Bombing • Aug. 6th, 1945 Hiroshima • Anola Gay • Aug. 9th, 1945 Nagasaki • Missed by 1.5 miles

  16. Japan Surrenders • Japanese leaders officially surrender to the United States aboard the USS Missouri.

  17. Aftermath - Outcome • Japan’s Constitution is rewritten by the US. • The Japanese Emperor is reduced to a figurehead. • Japan is not allowed to have a military, other than a defense force.
