  2. Nanjing Massacre(1937-1938) • In December 1937, Nanjing fell to the Japanese Imperial Army. • The Japanese army launched a massacre for six weeks. According to the records of several welfare organizations which buried the dead bodies after the Massacre, around three hundred thousand people, mostly civilians and POWs, were brutally slaughtered. • Over twenty thousand cases of rape were reported. Many of the victims were gang raped and then killed. Oil Embargo • U.S. freezes Japanese assets and starts embargo • U.S. cuts off sale of airplane fuel to Japan and cuts back on other natural resources. • Great Britain and the Dutch East Indies also participate in the embargo. • Japan cut off from its major source of oil • 66.4 percent of imports came from Anglo-Americans • Over 80 percent of its oil came from U.S. • Japanese Navy’s oil reserves (2 years) • Planned for war after August 1, 1941 • The longer Japan waited the worse its economic and military situation would become.

Decision for War • “Hull Note” delivered on Nov. 26, 1941 • Basically restated U.S. demands • Prime Minister Tōjō sees note as ultimatum and and proof that further diplomacy was futile. • Japanese public opinion was firmly behind the decision for war. • Late Nov., 1941 – U.S. learns Japanese Armada leaves Japan / lost track of and thought they were headed to attack the Philippines • Dec. 6, Japan breaks off negotiations, refusing to leave China

Attack on Pearl Harbor(December 7, 1941) • 183 Japanese airplanes attacked pearl harbor • Dive bombers, and torpedo planes struck airfields and naval vessels. • After a 15-minute lull, a second wave of 170 planes launched another attack at 8:40 that lasted 1 hour. • Causalities to U.S. Service personnel were 2,343 killed, 960 missing, and 1,272 wounded; • 151 U.S. Planes destroyed • Eight U.S. Battleships either sunk or damaged. • http://www.authentichistory.com/ww2/news/19411208_1230_FDR_Address_to_Congress.html • http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/pearlharbor/

The Bataan Death March April 9, 1942 • forced march of 70,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war captured by the Japanese in the Philippines WWII. • Forced marched 55 miles • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BtDeKWfL1c    • They were starved and mistreated, often kicked or beaten on their way, and many who fell were bayoneted.       • Only 54,000 reached the camp: 7,000 - 10,000 died on the way and the rest escaped into the jungle.

Battle of Coral Sea May 7-8 1942 • fought in the waters southwest of the Solomon Islands and eastward from New Guinea • was the first of the Pacific War's six fights between opposing aircraft carrier forces • Japanese could rightly claim a tactical victory on "points" • it was an operational and strategic defeat for them
