Lesson 2 • Learning Intention: Documentation of a range of source material in a visual diary or sketchbook showing independent planning of visual responses • Success Criteria: I can show development sketches of characters for my artwork. I can draw 13 different characters in my version of the Last Supper and complete it by the end of the session. • Learning Reflection: The most successful part of my artwork was………. • If I could change anything about my work it would be………

  3. Leonardo Da Vinci • Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near Florence, in Italy. Leonardo Da Vinci was a Florentine artist, one of the great masters of the Italian High Renaissance, who was also celebrated as a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. What is the Renaissance ? The Renaissance (a word which literally means "born anew") is a name given to a period in Western history during which the arts of important in classic cultures were revived. There were 4 different phases of the Renaissance. Da Vinci belonged to a period by what we now call the ‘High Renaissance.’ This was a brief period which lasted from roughly 1495 to 1527.

  4. The Last Supper • The Last Supper is a religious painting that shows the pivotal moment after Jesus has announced that one of those sitting at the table will betray him. The artwork shows Jesus with his 12 disciples. • From 1495 to 1497 Leonardo laboured on his masterpiece, The Last Supper, a mural in the refectory of the Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan. • Unfortunately, his experimental use of oil on dry plaster (on what was the thin outer wall of a space designed for serving food) was technically unsound, and by 1500 its deterioration had begun. • Since 1726 attempts have been made, unsuccessfully, to restore it; a concerted restoration and conservation program, making use of the latest technology, was begun in 1977 and is reversing some of the damage. • Although much of the original surface is gone the artwork is still a significant Refectory: A refectory is a dining hall in a monastery, boarding school or academic institution.

  5. The Last Supper is a great example of one point perspective. You can see that every single element of the painting directs one's attention straight to the midpoint of the composition, Christ's head.

  6. The Last Supper Pastiche Pastiche: pron [pas‐teesh], meaning:Openly imitating the previous works of other artists, often with satirical intent.

  7. Your Task Your task is to create your own version of the last supper. You will need to think about who you would invite to your last supper and include these 13 people or characters in your artwork. The people can be friends, family or famous people dead or alive. Your artwork will be drawn in one point perspective. This means you will need to draw the background of the last supper, you will need to copy the windows, the table and the basic perspective of the room. Watch this link to find out how to draw using one point perspective(Start at 3.30 into the clip) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOksHhQ8TLM You may bring in photos to assist you. You will need to draw the bodies of the people and collage or draw the heads. You will have two weeks to complete the activity.
