  2. Half a crown • A British coin that is no longer in use; was worth two shillings and sixpence, or about 30 pennies.

  3. Public-house • A place, such as a bar, that is allowed to sell alcoholic beverages.

  4. Surfeit • An excessive amount of something, such as food or drink.

  5. gipsy • A member of a race of people who travel from place to place, rather than living in one place.

  6. Artistic temperament • A manner of thinking or acting said to be common among artists ; often used to explain traits such as sensitivity, odd or unusual behavior, or nervousness.

  7. Criticize • To tell someone what you think is wrong with them.

  8. Amiable • To be good-natured and friendly.

  9. Gorgonzola cheese-hound • Gorgonzola is bumpy, crumbly cheese with many swirls of blue mold in it; based on this phrase, the dog probably has a bumpy, sort of wrinkly face or body.

  11. bloke • A British term for a man or a fellow.

  12. pedigree • An animal’s list of ancestors, or family members; a family tree.

  15. pip • A slang term for a minor illness, probably an upset stomach from being nervous or worried.
