  2. Checks and Balances To prevent one branch of government from gaining too much power, the Constitution sets up a system of checks and balances. Each branch can check or control the power of the other two branches.

  3. The Executive Branch • Checks on the Legislative Branch • May veto laws passes • Can propose new bills • Checks on the Judicial Branch • Appoints judges • Pardoning power

  4. The Legislative Branch • Checks on the Executive Branch • May override a President’s Veto • May reject treaties • May impeach the president • May reject appointments • Checks on the Judicial Branch • Can impeach Supreme Court justices • May propose amendments to judicial decisions

  5. The Judicial Branch • Checks on the Executive Branch • Can declare executive actions unconstitutional • Checks on the Legislative • Can declare laws unconstitutional
